The West Pier was closed in 1975, attempts have been made to raise money to restore it but these have been unsuccessful for a number of reasons including the objections from the owners of the Brighton Pier (which used to be called the Palace Pier) Storms have taken away most of the structure and a mysterious fire accounted for what was left, so restoration is now impossible.
