Ready for my next watch! Panerai vs Omega

Hey gang!

I’m ready for my next watch. The two watches that I want couldn’t be any more different.

I’ve never owned a Penarai before but I like them very much! I currently own an Omega SMP and it’s one of my favorites.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on these two pieces! Buy the one that I like most doesn’t apply as I like them both equally.

I'm leaning towards the Omega.

I've been looking at both brands myself. I'm asking myself what would fit in best with my current collection. I want to minimize design overlap as much as I can. However, I am a fan of divers, and with PAM, it's kind of their thing.

Maybe ask yourself similar questions, as it may push you one way over the other. Best of luck!

Definitely Panerai. Such a distinctive look and loads of fun with straps. After owning Panerai, you will always lust for one when it’s missing.

Hi Carlos what else do you have? Is your collection what’s in your signature or are those just your Rolex pieces? Since you like both equally maybe think about which one will balance the rest of your collection the best?

Rolex DJ41 Fluted Oyster Wimbledon
Rolex Explorer I 40mm
Rolex Explorer II 5-Digit Polar
Omega Seamaster SMP Black Wave
Hublot Classic Fusion Blue Dial Blue Croc
Tag Heuer Aquaracer 40mm Green Dial
Seiko Prospex SBP143 Diver
Casio G Shock G-Steel
Casio Casioak Blue

Of these, my favorite watches in order are: Exp I, Omega SMP, Hublot Classic Fusion

The obvious choice would be a proper dress watch but I seriously have not had an instance in the past 8 years where I have needed one. This current lineup plus the piece I’m adding needs to carry me until my 40th birthday when my goal is to consolidate down to 3 including a PM grail.

I know the Omega AT is the one that will “balance out” the lineup as I am sport/dive heavy and also adding a light dial wouldn’t hurt!

Decisions, decisions!

Decisions, decisions!

Since you’re planning on consolidating anyways for your 40th I’d recommend either holding off or going with the better resale value (I’d asume the Panerai). Otherwise maybe pick the one that would remain after the consolidation if you’re thinking of consolidating your Rolex pieces down to a PM, then pick the one that will fit then best with what you’re thinking for the future.

I think both are solid choices! If it was my money I like the Omega better especially if you can get it grey at a discount, but that Panerai is cool and very distinctive. Just seems like you already have a lot of black dials.

Omega, it's not even a close call. Although, personally, I would rather have a Grand Seiko in this price range.

Of these two the Panerai 005. A classic in the Panerai line-up and one that can be had in the pre-owned market at a cost that does not hurt. The Omega is nice but I don't see it getting much wrist time with the rest of your collection and I doubt it will survive a consolidation. Also, re-sale on the Omega might not be the best. Get the Panerai, add a few straps and have a great beater that may survive the consolidation.

The 005 is the way to go. One of the classics.
The strap game can get addicting and is a lot of fun.

The Panerai for me. I find this Omega not standing out in any way and it would bore me pretty fast.

Another vote for the 005 or throwing out the idea for a 000 over the Omega. Had an aquaterra and after a few months quickly moved it. As others have stated once you have one Panerai you will always be drawn to having one in your collection!

Anothe vote for Panerai, there is nothing else quite like it (apart from a blatant copy of course) whereas the Omega whilst no doubt very well made and good looking is a bit bland in comparison.

As an Aqua Terra owner and lover, my vote goes to Omega. To me Panerai have had their heyday a long time ago.

PAM adds more diversity due to case / design. Plus you can have fun with 3 or 4 colored rubber straps... and add a bracelet for that 'big and bold' look.

good choice. i was going to vote for Panerai.

distinctive design. dare i say the crown / guard is fun to use / wind.

you blocked off half the watch, you can tell its a PAM from a distance. Can't say the same for the Omega AT.

Another vote for Panerai here; they're more distinct/different than all of the others. I know they have their reputational "quirks" (especially as part of Richemont), but it's about what you enjoy.

With your current collection makeup, you've got room for a PAM.

While like you, I love my Omega SMP too, I’d go with a Panerai this time, it’s a fun watch and different to any of the others you have. Are you fixed on 005? There are so many others like the 177 for a brushed titanium tool watch finish, or more recent modern ones like 1313 with a beautiful blue sunburst dial, or all black ceramic casing of the 1441 etc. A Panerai would add something very different to your watch wearing experience and enjoyment.
