I work as a staff member in a large university. I'm the only one I've seen with a Rolex since I've been working here, faculty, staff, and/or students.

I worked as a staff member at a large private university in the Bay Area, and I don't recall many professors wore wristwatches. I remember seeing a particular professor in the med school wearing a YG DD. One of my buddies is a clinical professor at another med school in the city, and he doesn't wear a watch either. Perhaps it's because I worked with folks in the bio / medical field and they tend to wear gloves a lot more often then other departments.

I have a 1962 datejust. I am a computing faculty and I like the idea of something that is purely mechanical and predates most computer systems. It'll still be running long after the Apple watch is a thing of the past.

I am a Professor in Business and when teaching wear either Pepsi, Polar Explorer II, or Air King on a rubber strap. I also wear Longines Master collection triple date and IWC. When meeting with colleagues I wear apple watch, because my dean, provost, and many rock star colleagues all wear apple watches.

I have not seen a single Professor on my campus with a Rolex.

Any Professors out here in WIS-land want to chime in?

Joe
I am not a Professor however, working on finishing my PhD. I had a supervisor during my PhD that wore a TT DJ. I also saw a Professor in CS with a 126610LN. I spent my time in the faculty of engineering and mathematics. I would expect more business people to be into watches.

University Professors: What Rolex Do You Wear?

I retired last year and my wife keeps trying to talk me into being a part-time adjunct professor at a local college or university.

If I were interested in doing something like that, I wouldn’t have retired in the first place. lol

But I would definitely rotate and wear all of my watches: Submariner, GMT, DJ41, Speedy, or Seamaster.

I was at a dinner the other night with a bunch of retired Ivy league professors and one of them (from the EE department) was wearing a beautiful TT DJ on Jubilee.

I'm a professor too, and we appear to have the exact same Rolex rotation: Polar ExII, AK, BLRO. FWIW nobody's noticed and I haven't seen any others on colleagues or around campus.

Digital Media Specialist in the film department. I wear a sub. Only Rolex I've seen on campus. Apple watches dominate among faculty and staff although lots of people don't wear a watch at all. Recently a student did notice mine and complimented me on it. The students wear a mix of smart watches and fashion watches.

I'm a surgeon at an academic medical center, tenure-track. I do occasional lectures here or outside at our society meetings, but most of my time is spent taking care of patients and teaching residents in the OR or office.

I rotate between a Pepsi, Daytona, Sub, TT SD43 and a few Omegas for office days and meetings. On OR days, I usually wear some cheap beater Seiko, Pagani, or designer brand watches so I wouldn't be as bummed if I were to lose them.

I remember this old thread!

Adjunct, non-tenure track faculty here in Business as well as Human Resources.

I teach at night twice a week and go to campus straight from full time job so my rotation is my normal work wear - either Speedy, McQueen Monaco, or Sub Date.

University Professors: What Rolex Do You Wear?

I find it refreshing that college professors on TRF seem liberated from any irrational apprehension about wearing a Rolex in the lecture hall and on campus.

Meanwhile, in the business world, the mere thought of wearing a Rolex to the office devolves into a massive existential crisis for some. I’m not sure what's going on there. But it just seems irrational to me.

Public school teacher, and I wear my DJ36 quite a bit. I also rotate a Tudor BB58, Speedmaster, Seiko Alpinist, and a few others into the mix. Never had anyone say a word about my watches.

Anecdotally, I think at least part of this is that things are more zero-sum in private business than they are in higher ed. I don't make money off my students in a direct way, so it's not like they see a fancy watch and link it to their (or their parents') tuition dollars. On the other hand, if I'm dealing with somebody as a client I might be more inclined to feel like I'm being taken advantage of somehow by somebody with a very expensive watch.

At the same time, at least in my department and school there isn't really direct competition among colleagues for salary, salaries aren't grotesquely unequal, and there's not much resentment for what inequality there is. So less scope for the green-eyed monster here.

Good question. What watch would go best wearing a tweed coat with elbow patches?

Not a professor myself but I remember a professor I had at Harvard Business School who had a vintage Calatrava on each wrist and an Omega pocket watch/stop watch on his desk. I remember he had them tucked under his sleeves but I managed to see them both over a few days and when I asked him why he wears 2 watches and still needs a stopwatch, he humbly smiled and said "ah, you're a watch guy!". Great professor!

Western boots generally go unappreciated outside their traditional geographic range. But they’re the best footwear ever invented. If I may quote the late great Jerry Jeff Walker -

And them limey eyes, they were eyein' the prize
That some people call manly footwear
And they said "You're from down South and when you open your mouth
You always seem to put your foot there"
