New explorer vs used

Hey guys,
I’m in the market for an explorer. I’m on a list at the AD for a ref 124270. I spoke to them this past week and they said they hope to call me with one by the end of summer. I just stumbled across the threads on here regarding 32xx movement issues. I’m now wondering if I should consider a used ref 114270 or 214270 instead. What are y’all’s thoughts?

I am constantly shocked at how accurate mine is. Months go by and it is within 15 seconds.

I wouldn’t over think the movement question. If you have the chance of a new one from your AD then I’d probably wait but obviously that depends on if their estimate of when or if you get an allocation is accurate

Obviously every movement is different. My Sub holds about +4 secs over 12 days. I wouldn’t pass on a watch you want because of movement concerns.

I would 100% go for a 114270. Pure class. From an aesthetic point of view, near identical to the 124270, but imo with a better proportioned case/bracelet situation. You'll save a few grand as well.

Final point - I find the comfort of the hollow center-link bracelets of the past to be superior to the heft of the modern bracelets.

To be brutally honest with you, I don't wear my Rolex to tell time. I use my iphone which isn't COSC certified, but it never loses or gains a second, ever. All that to say that, I wouldn't worry about 32XX movement issues. I would get the new watch.

I would 100% opt for the older model (214270), not simply b/c of known issues with he 32xx, but because I like the dial better (matte finish, layout of the text). And the differences in the mk2 214270 version to me are preferable (longer hands, lumed 3/6/9). “Used” pieces are readily available, often in like-new condition, from many of the forum’s trusted sellers.

But about your concern with the movement. If there’s an issue in the first 5 years with the 32xx (warranty period), Rolex will fix it. Where I see frustration from many is that it getting your 32xx serviced by Rolex doesn’t necessarily create a permanent fix, as many of these movements have had to go in a second time (and some more than twice).

Some members of the forum here have pointed to “teething problems” of pre-32xx movements (in a way to suggest that all movements have issues), but this doesn’t appear to be a minor issue with the 32xx; this has been going on for ~7 years, and it’s not clear if there’s been a durable fix by Rolex. Whatever minor issues were present in the 31xx models were worked out in short order by Rolex, and the 31xx is a highly accurate, highly regarded workhorse of a movement.

And it’s not clear how widespread this may be, though many feel it’s simply a matter of time that a 32xx will present the low-amplitude/slow timekeeping issue, and those that aren’t seeing this type of out-of-spec performance don’t care, or aren’t measuring it.

I agree the 32xx is and can be a very accurate and consistent movement - as has been reported here on TRF (especially during the first half of the power reserve)…..until it isn’t.

Personally I’m optimistic that Rolex has done something in recent times to address the 32xx issues (and will need more seasoning to prove out), but I understand that many still have and will have concerns until there’s more concrete confirmation.

All that being said, good luck with your decision!

I have an Explorer two tone and mine runs fine. It has been very accurate ever since I bought it back in 2021. I have been wearing it for about 6 weeks straight and has only gained about 10 seconds. I do also own a pepsi and that one loses about 2-4 seconds daily.

I bought an Explorer II last year and I have to be honest, I was concerned as well but then I thought about the warranty and the fact that if something went wrong I could get it serviced at no extra cost and bought with confidence.

Which is delusional and wrong. The new bracelets on Rolex wipe the floor with any watch. ANY watch. Best in class.

The new model is superb. Jump on it and enjoy it. It’s better in every way.
I have one. I’d never swap it for an older model, which would be objectively worse and only an option if you hanker for some sentimentality or you are a collector.

I've got a 124270 that's about 18 months old and haven't had any issues with it at all. I love how the bracelet tapers more than the 40mm version too - takes some getting used to, but I think it gives it a bit more personality.

You can also pick them up for near or slightly under retail too now I think (ebay, subdial, etc).

I am too shocked at how accurate mine is. The only time I EVER mess with the crown is to make sure it's tight - otherwise, I NEVER have to adjust the time. Just a perfect timekeeper.

Why did you buy a Rolex in the first place, if it's not being used for its primary function?
