Stupid Nicknames
I have just read a thread in which a forum member has just struck lucky and managed to buy a rather nice timepiece, but rather than introduce the watch using the name and or model number it is announced via a nickname.
Why oh why is it necessary for watches to be given insanely stupid nicknames. Rolex give their watches names and model numbers but it would seem that this is not good enough and instead daft bizarre nicknames have to be introduced. I'll probably get pilloried for posting this but it just drives me mad hearing these daft names.

Let it go, man.
You're not gonna defeat it. People are free to do what they want. I don't tend to use the nicknames myself, but life gets a lot easier when you let the little things slip that don't matter. |

I think the answer is very simple, nicknames are easy to remember. I don’t mind people using them, it’s just a bit of fun. Of course the model number carries much more information and it’s preferable in any formal situation. I would never text my SA and ask for a Pepsi or a Panda, I would actually see that as being rude.

Exactly, and every watch I’ve been offered has been reference number, and or link to that particular model …
Forgot Coke as well, blast .. I find it so funny how this triggers people, I had an old work colleague who would grind his teeth, it drove my mate mad to the point they actually had a dust up, I can imagine some people on here getting physically angry, falling out with Mrs - “what’s up Terry?” “ nothing !!!! I said nothing !!! “I know you, something has upset you, is it the kids? The dog? The tea I made?” No !!!! Not that, he called it BATGIRL !!! BATGIRL !!!

I get it and understand both sides of the discussion. I don't mind either way and think some of the nicknames are very creative.

It depends...
Some are okay / make sense - Pepsi GMT, panda face Daytona, etc. Many are just infantile though. I could never request a "Bruce Wayne GMT" for example. |

Think Rolex are the only high end watch company that's now associated with silly childlike nicknames, once it was a prestigious watch company. But now with some of the dials and silly names its getting more like a Micky Mouse watch company.

Sir Roger Scruton's observation of the tendency of uglification of everything in the modern culture. As technology advances, people seem to grow less capable of creating things that are sophisticated and beautiful. Even nice things have to be dumbed down with juvenile expressions.

The ones that have been around forever don't bother me, like the Pepsi, Hulk, Smurf
And the ones that are just abbreviations for the name make a lot of sense, like Sub41, SD43, DD40 But the effort to assign a nickname to every watch in the catalog is getting on my nerves. I think the "batgirl" was the one that finally pushed me over the cliff. Now I hear stuff like "ghost" and "starbucks" and kermit becoming "cermit" and just shake my head. Sometimes green submariner is just fine... |

Many of the newer nicknames seem forced. Coming up with a nickname just because everything now has to have one. Good news might be that eventually there might be so many nicknames, that the nicknamer’s won’t even remember what they’re for. The reference numbers are simple and easy to remember IMHO. Does it bother me to the point of distraction? No. Do I prefer the catalogue reference numbers? Yes |

I don't use the newer nicknames (I wouldn't know a Cookie Monster or a Pikachu if I saw one) but I don't mind them. Call them what you like. They're just watches after all, and I suppose names make them more engaging or relatable than numbers. Otherwise just ignore.

The only one which annoys me is the "panda". It is so obviously wrong, but it seems no-one even pays attention to understand. A Panda's eyes are full dark circles not mere thin black circles as are on this watch. The actual Panda Daytona had the full blackened circles just like the animal's. Oh well.

Stupid Nicknames
I generally don’t use nicknames in any of my posts. But nicknames don’t bother me that much.

Perhaps, just perhaps, it is because humans like to form 'associations' with martial things for ease of memory. It also aids in communication considering 'common' knowledge at the time. Perhaps it's a 'Human Tribal' thing?

BATGIRL! Yes! She’s a stunner.
For the record the owner of my AD referred to it as the Batman and not M126710BLNR-0002 although the second one has such a nice ring! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

A luxury watch is really a frivolous purchase when it comes right down to it. Why not let frivolous nicknames abound?
I know the correct references but when you talk to most people, they only know the nicknames. Of course, if they bother you greatly, why read threads that use them? I could never understand why people burden themselves unless it’s to pile negativity on someone else. The anonymity of the internet makes people to an extend that is unjustifiable in that regard (no just for WIS, for everything) Instead, have a Coke and a smile ! Couldn’t resist |

It is irritating but overall I just ignore it.
We have a friend who is in the jewelry business locally and they stopped selling Omega in favor of pre owned Rolex. Their store is now particularly irritating as they refuse to use anything but nick names, even in their radio adverts. I stop in once in a while just to check out what they have in, and I will say it’s particularly irritating when I ask to see a reference and I typically use the reference number or BLRO,LV etc.. and they always seem to think they are correcting me by saying, oh, you mean the…”Batman, Starbucks, Panda,etc..” . Don’t try and force me into the silly nickname business too. However many of their staff were only in the diamond business before, so I think the silly childish nicknames may actually help them as well internally as we aren’t all watch dorks. So as much as I hate it I guess I get it to an extent as well.

BLNR is so much simpler. And how the "batman" on oyster turned into "batgirl" for the same watch on jubilee is something I never understood.

^^Me too. It just got idiotic like the idea was a juvenile attempt to irritate by the choice of the newer names. Then some could sanctimoniously tell others to lighten up it’s just a nickname. So predictable the motives farther down the road these nicknames progress from. At some point every educated grown adult has an internal standard between ridiculous or whimsical. In what universe is BLNR or BLNR on jubilee, BLRO on oyster, VTNR,CHNR, GRNR, etc…too difficult to know or say??? If it is, you might possibly be too stupid and a Rolex isn’t the right watch for you at this time in your life. Perhaps a rose gold Patek Philippe “cocoa puff” dial Nautilus or a AP “jiffy pop” dial kangaROO? Be sure to use the nickname at your PP authorized dealer to get on their waitlist.
