New from Spain

Hello all...I'm retired USN living and working in Spain as a language teacher. I recently bought a U series 16610. While in the navy back in 1985 I purchased a Date Just. I saved and saved and while in Italy I went to the Rolex shop, 600 USD in hand, I wanted a Sub! At that time I believe they were running about 1200 or so in US Dollars, well I couldn't afford it and I settled for the Date Just with the Oyster band instead. To make a long story short, I was never really happy with the watch and subsequently sold it on eBay back in 1997 for more than I originally paid for it. Four years ago I bought a fake 16610, one of the so called good ones, paid about 300 for it and have been wearing it everyday for 5 years, no one was the wiser but me. Now I'm the proud owner of a U series 1997 1/2 16610 and no one has a clue that I changed the watch on my wrist but me, I'll stick the fake Chinese one in the drawer and wear it while doing real dirty work or just keep it for posterity or maybe float test it. I look forward to posting here with you guys.

Opps, I just remembered, it was an Oysterdate and I had to wind it....! Not my cup-o-tea with my memory I was always late!

Bienvenidos !

Pleased to read you have the real thing! Sub's are really classy.

A fake on the other hand is something to reconsider, its place is in the garbage dump.

You are 100% right, the fake is going in the dumpster ASAP. I can't stand it, now that the original is next to it it's so easy to tell the fake. As a matter of fact I think I will take a sledge to it and post some pics once it's done! Yup, now that will be fun...

Welcome Steve, you are a lucky guy living in beautiful Spain.

I'm glad you appreciate the qualities of a real Rolex Sub....accept no substitutes.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, this is a great set-up. I never knew there was an entire subculture about these awesome watches. BTW, I just made a donation to become a 2009 Pledge Member, I think it's worth it, this is by far one of the best put together forums I have seen.
