RSC vs. Local Watchmaker

Greetings!

I'm trying to help a co-worker with servicing her Lady Datejust from 1966. I think it might have the 1161 Caliber. I'm not sure of the service history since she got it from a store that sold coins and other precious metal stuff.

I think the best route might be a local watchmaker to service the watch but the thought of maybe having RSC service it was something to consider. The clasp on the bracelet is not working.

My local AD said to send it there and they can determine if it's something they can service.

I would like to know from everyone here, is the watch too old for Rolex to service?

My suggestion is to ask a RSC if they can service it. We can only guess. If you contact a RSC, their response would be very helpful to the community for future reference.

I agree! I've used RSC for my wife's Datejust, but that watch was from 2001. A Rolex from 1966? I'm unsure if RSC can work on it, but it would be nice.

Nothing wrong with a local watchmaker as long as they have the latest training and tools.

It ain't rocket science, but a bad one can leave you wanting something more.

Well, since she got it from a store that sold coins and other precious metal stuff, shouldn't she first make sure it's a real Rolex before sending off to the RSC?

I'd say a local, well-regarded watchmaker with good Rolex repair experience could do an overhaul and determine if it's genuine.

That was my experience getting my 16800 serviced, I didn't want it polished or any of the fading/patina replaced so I was told RSC. would want to try and restore to new, I just wanted the internals serviced so chose to have the local Rolex certified do the cleaning. They did an excellent job

I was faced with this exact question and opted to let my local AD service my Daytona. Two months later I still dont have the watch back and no eta. Frankly, I regret my decision! If I had sent to the RSC, I would be able to get a status, and it would come back with a two year guarentee along with a fresh warranty card. With the local AD, sure, they warranty their work for a year, but if something happens I can only go back to them!

I would say in almost all cases, (not for refub, etc) send to an RSC. There are probably a lot more reasons to use an RSC over a local AD and their certified watch makers... IMHO.

Thanks for all of your opinions! I informed her of her options and it sounds like she might go local. I called a watchmaker I used before and they can fix her jubilee bracelet.

I do think RSC is the best practice...but it is her watch!
