UK York Mappin & Webb - good stock!

Hi all,

Had a couple of days break in York, there was good stock at this store in the city centre including a sub date and bluesy etc. Here are the pics with their prices from the actual store. Hope this helps someone.

I’d imagine that most of their display watches would be exhibition only and therefore unfortunately not for sale.
Maybe I’m wrong OP, did you enquire?

It would be interesting to know what exactly was for sale?

Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to enquire but normally they mention exhibition only rather than all the prices - there was not a single sign for exhibition only in the window. Surely not every piece here is exhibition only?! Apologies if I unintentionally misled but maybe worth enquiring if there is something of interest

I;ve seen windows like this in a few big cities now.

Most are exhibition but I have pushed the sales people in some and more models are available, even two tone Daytonas, but mainly DJ, YG DD, YM, even some Skys, OF and TT.

To keep it simple, most steel sports, steel subs, GMT's and 41mm Exp, blue/green dial DJ and smaller OP's are exhibition.

UK York Mappin & Webb - good stock!

I’m taking my daughter to university there this Saturday. Popped in last year and they couldn’t have been less interested so probably won’t bother this weekend!

Looking at the selection I think you’re right that these are available.

You’ll probably still get the interrogation +/- the delay tactics while you’re vetted but I think doable.

Not sure why people are so condescending to the OP, the M&W branches (and others) I've been to specifically have the exhibition only signs for watches that are not for sale. Historically, the signs were on all watches, then some watches and now hardly any, if at all.

Presumably to muddy the waters on just how much stock is really available. They can field the ‘Exhibition Only’ line on the high demand (e.g GMTs and Subs), but have discretion on many others

Same experience in goldsmiths trafford centre. Display cases completely full, all exhibition only signs replaced with “more models inside”

Doubt any were available but all 3 sales assistants looked insanely bored in an empty store

My AD had the same system for window displays when I last looked. If there was a price displayed with the watch it was for sale. Exhibition only models did not have prices displayed and there was a "For Exhibition Only" flag nearby. It could be different now.

The prices displayed, or not, are irrelevant and nearly all AD stock in the UK is exhibition only. Still.

I still don’t get it? Guys? How these sales people make a living. I feel bad for them with all this nonsense and stupidity.

None of those pieces are high demand. I would think if you are a previous customer and they know you something would be available?

It is a good display if nothing else, a couple of years ago my nearest AD had a sign up saying "we've got nowt, don't bother coming in" (translated and paraphrased)

I suppose that one or two could be available to buy, they have a few sky dwellers.

York is the same M&W that told me in 2017 they were not open to new customers as they had to look after their existing Rolex buyers

Making an easy but likely boring living as most if not all the watches that can be sold have already been sold.

I’d imagine that ideally they’d like volumes to double or triple so that they could sell more to meet the demand and to make the time pass quicker?

Agreed. Can't blame the OP as I too have seen less exhibition signs and more prices on watches. Of course it doesn't mean you can buy them but at least it's less off putting and means you might go in and inquire and maybe try your luck a little.

I know this AD, it’s definitely exhibition only. They have some gold pieces for sale and two tone but nothing SS. They removed the exhibition only sign some time ago now. If you go in and actually ask.. you’ll get the waiting list treatment.

Some of display here will definitely be for sale though. Mainly all gold pieces.

OP, to be fair you are right that if they were destined for exhibition only, like we see in many other AD, there should be a sign. However, we have all lost faith at this point.

Even if these watches are exhibition only, they are easily obtainable without any purchase history. Ask in the shop and they might sell it on the spot or put your name down and most likely they'll call within days
