Uncomfortable Experience

At a local casual restaurant, a young man seated with a few friends and a parent, attracts my attention by loudly saying "nice Rolex Bro" and extending his hand for a fist bump. He asked for details, I replied "its a watch", and followed my wife to the outdoor dining area.

I chalked it up to youthful exuberance, but awkward none the less.

It happens occasionally.

I usually just reply with “Thanks, it’s a great watch.”

If they don’t seem too sketchy and the moment strikes right I will take it off and let them check it out and try it on.

A "thanks" didn't seem to end it as he asked for details.

Probably just curious…if he was a watch enthusiast, then nothing abnormal with asking for details. We all know we love the details!

It really depends on what Rolex you were wearing?

You should know whether the guy was genuine or whether he was being obnoxious....

I enjoy having impromptu conversations with other watch people.
Not so much if someone is targeting you with accomplices waiting to follow you.
The later doesn't really happen in my neck of the woods, but I'm aware of the possibility.

Years ago while in Aruba I commented "congrats on the world's best travel watch" to a guy joining our boat ride. He was spooked and looked like a deer in the headlights, and was too nervous to notice I was wearing the exact same watch.

The only time I ever did that was with a co-worker's husband at a private party. I was meeting him for the first time, sidled up, noticed we had the same watch on, showed him mine and said, "Nice watch." We had a nice moment. This was before things went crazy. But, yeah, in public, a stranger, today? The kid needs a little lesson in decorum.

There’s nothing wrong with appreciation from the youthful around us. They aspire to join our passion and treating the educated ones with respect is paramount.

How old was he?

I would have walked up to him and let him have a closer look.

I wouldn’t have shunned him. That would come across as being snobbish.

Agreed. Who knows who was sitting nearby when this person loudly spouted off. Uncomfortable to say the least.

I was in the airport a while ago, and I saw a gent and his partner waiting in a line when I clocked his watch.

A Grand Seiko Evolution 9 - it was a real eyecatcher of a watch.

Without thinking I passed comment, saying, "That's a lovely timepiece you have!". His face lit up and told me that I was the first person to notice it. Off the back of this we had a brief but pleasant conversation.

Like it or not, nice watches draw attention.

First time I had someone comment on my daytona was on Tulsa OK, we were checking in and on of the bell boys got all excited when he saw it on my wrist. I probably could have handled it better, but to be honest I was more worried about my wife hearing him freak out over the watch then his actual reaction

Had a service manager at a local car dealership comment "nice watch". I considered it a compliment.

If a young loud person was able to spot your watch, so could anyone else in the restaurant with ill intentions. I understand the awkwardness of young exuberant people,
but placing worrying about a sense of increased security risk sounds illogical. Don’t let it be seen by anyone if you don’t want it to be noticed by everyone.

I have to agree. It's nice to talk with fellow enthusiasts at times. It may well be that that young person may never be able to afford such a watch, but he can still admire, interact and enjoy watches vicariously.
