Son's first Rolex, GMT II or Sub no date?
Hi,
My eldest son is contemplating buying his first Rolex but is quite impulsive. At the moment he is wanting the Sub no date as it is the most affordable sports model. I know that he likes my GMT II Coke but that model would only be available pre owned. He is very knowledgeable about all of the sports models and so is fully aware of all of the good and not so good bits on the various models. He will probably end up as a teacher and so the date function would be useful and the GMT has the extra interesting complication. If times became hard which would be the easiet to sell and which would return more of his money? He really wants a brand new watch which is the other factor pulling him towards the Sub no date. The Sub date is available new as another option. He is not keen on the LV green bezel. I have told him that unworn or excellent GMT watches do appear for sale. If it were me buying it I would go for the SeaDweller, it has the date, no cyclops, very robust and not as common as the Submariner series. Only problem is that the SD is more expensive again. Looking to the long term which do you think would be the best watch for him. Thanks for you thoughts. PeterT |

Any of those would be an excellent first Rolex. There are no bad choices here and any of them could be expected to hold their value. If the Sub no date is what he can afford now, then go for it.

Hello Peter, ......... go for the SeaDweller 16600, it has the date, no cyclops, very robust and as you said, not very common as the Submariner... Can't go wrong with the other models.

Hi Peter,
IMO (while this might sound boring) the Sub date might be worth considering. I prefer the triplock to the twinlock.

Why not a "coke" like dads or other 16710? You could find a BNIB watch, or very close to it from one of our sellers here. Even if it were mint/slightly worn/barely worn this might do the trick. I mean if he likes your.........why not? There are some great buys that still appear avalible here.

Between the two, you gotta go with the classic.

Let him decide on which one he want, is the best policy.

the classic SD is still available in quite a few AD's and price is reasonable. I love the SD but I like the LV sub and if you get a black insert for the bezel, it might be much more attractive for some.

As a first Rolex and one with a high demand in the resale market, I recommend the Sub. Try to get the date feature if possible.
