Need help on Panerai!

I don't mean to sound offensive, but I need to be educated. What is considered the Panerai that put them on the map. What is a model that would let's say be equivalent to Rolex's Submariner? I really like the style, but don't know enough about them to begin to want to buy one. I like the Radiomir style, but again not sure what I am looking at. Big watch that just screams to my liking! Any input would be great!

111 is the most equivalent to 16610.

If you want to venture into the the magic Panerai world,the PAM 111 is a great starting point.Historic,recessed/sandwich dial/crystal back/very accurate manual wound movement/classic polished Luminor casing/small second hand....with the added bonus that one of the classic PAMs, are also one of the least expensive in the collection..... and with a few straps the 111 serves as a whole collection,on its own.

The manual wind Luminor painted dial is about as close as it gets to what was available to the public in the '90s when Panerai gained some momentum in the market. This means the 000 or 005 (speaking of modern pieces). The sandwich dial models, the 111 and 112, are the same save for the dial and some movement decoration.

To the original question - the Luminor is what put Panerai on the map. And Sylvester Stallone

Submariner = 111
GMT Master = 88
Daytona = 233

Good luck whatever you choose in the end.

Check out the panerai website.
Panerai hold their value better if they are manual. Rolex Sub is auto.
Also, sandwich dial is something that sets Panerai apart, models like 233, 312, 112 - simple clean look.

You need to go to a Panerai AD and have them give you some books on the history of Panerai, it's pretty cool stuff.

Well, I was just trying to figure out how:

Submariner = 111
GMT Master = 88
Daytona = 233

To me, the 111 is a manual wind non-date movement vs. the Sub's automatic with or without date.

The 88, I can see how it's like the GMT, only it doesn't have a rotating bezel.

The 233 is a GMT with date. It's not a chronograph, like the Daytona.

To me:

Submariner = the new 312 - classic case shape with modern movement and date.
GMT Master = PAM 092 - auto, GMT with date, rotating bezel (albeit with direction and not 24 hours)
Daytona = PAM 275 - but two register.

I don't think TR was trying to compare functions. Think more like this...
TR was saying the quintessential Pam is the 111 and the quintessential Rolex is the Sub.
The reasonable price 233 is sought after like the reasonable priced Daytona.

Not sure if I agree with the 88 to GMT Master, but oh well!

I think Heru Meant
Daytona = 236

imho,if its the Radiomir that sings to you...you might want to take a look at the 210 & 183. both Pams have manual wound movements,sandwich dial and belong to the historic base models! happy hunting!

Sorry I disagree, Id say the PAM 024 is closest to the 16610.

The 111 is a GREAT watch and stunning but it is not a diver watch like the Sub or 24.

The PAM 243 is the most like the DSSD.

I love both the Rolex and Panerai dive watches for their own reasons.... I love how easily you can change the entire look of the Panerai with a simple band swap but I love how tough the Rolex divers are due to their bracelets.

You can't go wrong with either that is for sure.

I think the 111 does a similar job as the Sub in representing the brand (not necessarily functionality).

Panerai & Rolex are definitely related

But I don't think you can find or should try to equate any models between Rolex & Panerai as they have different DNA and progression.

Panerai from 1860 up to 1992 are Italian state military secret.
They go for limited public sale in 1993 from their Firenze shop and fully & globally launched & commercialized in 1997 with Vendome (Richemont) takeover

I also recommend you get this book:
http://www.vintage-panerai.de/shop/i...243a07a85653e2

It'll help.
