Basel 2010. Will the 14060m stay ?

I think it's the usual rumor flying around. It says while the old 16610 SS will cease at Basel 2010 the 14060M will stay in.....

I own a 14060 (no date Sub) it is part of my Sub collection. There is a cult following for this watch. Many people like the no date feature, some like the old school Rolex style (watch lug holes, old style bracelet) Who knows, as many here know Rolex just made this a certified watch which is was not in the past. My guess is no this watch will not go away any time soon. Rolex will still make it as long as there are people who still buy the watch. Some feel this watch may get a ceramic bezel and other upgrades time will tell.

I also own this watch, but as I have said before, I am guessing this watch is not long for this world. Rolex is usually fairly consistent, and I don't see them switching all subs BUT the no date to ceramic long term. I also don't see them putting the effort into upgrading it, when the Sub date sells a lot better, and discontinuing the watch would likely not result in any lost sales (most people would who wanted it would likely just buy the sub date).

I think this watch continues simply because Rolex has had no reason to discontinue it, but I think that will change with the new ceramic subs. It may not happen this year, but I am guessing in the next few...

Discontinue the original Sub, the Bond Sub? I don't think so. Rolex is too smart to kill an icon.

When I first began looking for my 14060M I passed up several with date-subs. If the 14060M wasn't being offered new I think those who wanted one would simply find one on the used market.

You might be right, but given that Rolex discontinued the Sea-Dweller (another Icon), and the consistency with which they have been upgrading the line, I don't think the current 14060 fits with where the Submariner line is headed. Also 99% of Rolex buyers (I would guess) know little to nothing about the history of the brand, what the models are, or how they evolved. They just walk into Lux Bond and Green, or Lee Micheal's, or Ben Bridge or wherever, and buy a Rolex they like because it's a Rolex. They may know they want a Submariner, but I think the subtlety of date vs. no date does not even enter into their universe. I guess time will tell, and I hope I am wrong, because I like the No Date. They may keep it since they use the movement in the Airking and the Explorer anyway, but I have my doubts.

Also, I would agree that the Submariner is an Icon, but specifically the Submariner No Date? I am not sure that distinction exists for most people, even the casual enthusiast. and Technically, the last No Date Bond sub was the 5513, which is long gone, though Timothy Dalton wore a 16610(or perhaps a 16800) Sub date, so actually the 16610 may the only "Bond Sub" currently made.

I think maybe the watch may be discontinued at some point, thats progress, but from a finance point of view for Rolex, this is an icon and the entry level into the sport watch range, apart from the Explorer, so to discontinue this watch would exclude prospective new buyers, it would be like removing the Airking from the range, many peoples first step onto the Rolex ladder.

After all Rolex is there to make money, they need products that will be exclusive, but still appeal to as many pockets as possible...

The millions of 16610's out there kinda kills that thought process. You will never make money on a 16610 or any other modern day Rolex for that matter.

It would be consistent with how the GMT got upgraded, Gold first, TT a year later, and SS a year after that. No one mentions the explorer, but as that only comes in SS, that may well get updated next year too. The explorer 1 is the only 36mm rolex in the old style case. and the Explorer II has already started getting the new GMT movement.

It is difficult to say, obviously there has been nothing official.
From what Rolex has said there will be a new SS Date model this 2010 Basel.
One may think that for the line to be consistent that it is about time to
bring the 14060M up to date with a maxi dial and a supercase.
At the end of the day we will just have to wait and see
