I went to the local AD to try the black Daytona last Sat.

Once I put it on my hand, I just didnt feel like this is the watch I must
have. While the sales person kept saying it is hard to find and she had
no problem selling this watch, the WG submarnier on the display
case caught my attention. I tried the sub on, and really like it. The
blue color is really beautiful to watch.

Put aside the re-sale value and hard to find factor.

Which one do you like better??

Daytona is beautyful, but no date, for me that is a must.

By all means, get the watch that you like best. If it's the Sub, know you've chose one of the great and iconic watches of all time. Same for the Daytona.

To add, I never buy a new watch with an eye towards resale. If at some point I delve into the vintage market, I'll probably look at it differently, but for new I get what I like. And wear it.

If we are talking the SS Daytona, vs. a WG Submariner... the Submariner will win every time.

There is *nothing* like the feeling, and weight of gold or platinum compared to SS.

General speaking, SS Daytona from AD is still a hard find, most ADs still have a waiting list. If you are thinking of re-sale value, buy Daytona, because as soon as you walk out the door, WG Sub might already drop $1 - 2k, but not for Daytona. Just my 2 cents.

Well not only are they two completely different watches, the price is quite a bit different, if we are talking about a Stainless Daytona vs All Gold Submariner.

Obviously you need to buy the one YOU want, not the one everyone on the forum likes!

I'm very fortunate to have both, and can honestly say they both are awesome! I would have to say if price is no option, by the all gold submariner.......... It's friggin amazing on your wrist!

I would get the one you like the most. I agree the blue white gold is awesome, wish I had the $$$ I personally would purchase that over the Daytona anyday as I like the date feature as well...Good Luck

I'm not a huge fan of the blue dial. The SS Black Daytona is a classic and extremely versatile. It goes equally well (looks amazing) with a suit or a polo and khaki shorts. The only drawback to a Daytona is the lack of a date function.

Purchase the Daytona, wear it and enjoy. You'll probably break even or make money when you sell it.

Purchase the Gold Sub, the minute you resize the bracelet and walk out the AD's door, there goes the 30% of the watch.

I see people using the "non date" argument against Daytona all the time. I don't get how that is a valid point? It shouldn't be used against this beautiful watch, not a biased opinion.....just an observation. If dates were so important then why wouldn't everyone get a Casio? It not only shows you the date but will show you the calendar for the month and the year, and may even come with a calculator, if you are lucky!

We buy expensive watches to feel good, have that sense of achievement and "yes" to check time. With that said, the WG Submariner gets my vote coz, the blue dial is just an absolute stunner (not because of the date)! But, these two watches are in two different categories and price range. You should really get a watch that you like and are comfortable wearing.

Whatever you decide to get.....make sure you enjoy it thoroughlly!

If you factor in resale value, I have a feeling the SS Daytona will hold its value a lot better than the precious-metal sub.

I would pick the sub but, I have to say, how can you tell the difference between SS and white gold? I guess the owner knows what they have on their wrist but to me, it looks the same as SS and the price is oh so much more.

The Sub will take a HUGE DEPRECIATION as soon as you walk out the door. The white gold Daytona drops from close to 30k to 14-17K as soon as you walk out the door.

I have never worn a solid gold watch so I don't know what it feels like. I'm guessing AMAZING. I have a SS Daytona just because I don't want to spend the money for a WG one. I also have a SS Sub and I have to say, although I miss the date, I prefer to wear the Daytona for one reason. I wore a vintage GMT for many years and just got used to the lower profile, smoother rounded case. I wear the Sub a bit but I just don't like the way it sits up on my wrist. I know it's a result of having the bezel up where it can be operated easily but I just like a watch to sit flatter on my wrist. If you're a diver or just used to a thicker watch I'm sure you don't notice it at all.

I have never bought a watch because it was hard to find, or because the AD tells me it's a rare piece. For me, it's all about the watch's appearance first and foremost, followed by how it feels on my wrist.

Resale plays some part (especially if the price is above US$5k) but otherwise, it's all about whether the watch "sings'' to me and catches my eye. The presence or absence of a date is irrelevant to me.

As for your choices, I'd point out that the WG Blue Sub is maybe twice as expensive as the S/S Daytona, so strictly speaking, we're not making fair comparisons. But if pressed for an answer and if money was no object, then I'd go for the Sub, simply because it sings louder to me.
