Ready to pull the plug on a DSSD (currently an Omega PO owner), one question...
I currently own an Omega PO and I am ready to sell it (9 months old) and pull the plug on the Rolex Deep Sea...I have one question I could not find an answer searching so sorry if this has been adressed..
I notice alot of members refer to the size of the DSSD as 43mm while the specs say 44mm...are there 2 different models? If so, how do I make sure I get the 44mm.. Thanks! |

The watch has not changed...just the printed text. Depending on where you officially measure from (and round up), the watch could be 44mm. My belief is it's nothing more than Rolex marketing. There are a ton of watches out now measured at 44mm and above (Omega w/ their PO line is one of them) and I think Rolex decided that 43mm seemed a little off, so they 'updated' their marketing material as I'm sure one of the reasons they developed the DSSD was to compete w/ all the 44mm+ guys.
BTW...I had a PO Chrono & Breitling Skyland Avenger Blacksteel prior to buying my DSSD. While I really liked both of those watches, they are now long gone and I'm extremely happy w/ my DSSD and know I wouldn't be wearing either one of them w/ the DSSD on my wrist. Good luck...you'll love the watch I'm sure. |

one of the advertisements I have says below:
17mm deep. 43mm case. 904L steel incorporating rolexs revolutionary ringlock system. 5mm thick dome shaped sapphire crystal. grade 5 titanium alloy seals the case back shut. waterproof to 3900m (12800ft), almost 13 times deeper than any man has dived before. glidelock clasp will expand the bracelet by 18mm in precise 1.8mm increments while the fliplock extension link can extend the bracelet by an extra 26mm. All these numbers are good for pub quiz!!!!! |

First, I'd like to say I agree 100% with Moby33 in his explanation of what is happening here. I have an original press pack on the DEEPSEA complete with DVD. This is from June 2008 before the watch hit the shops here in the UK. Everything in this literature says 43mm. The watch hasn't changed but they are now saying 44mm.
I think when it was first launched, Rolex were new to the larger watch arena and decided to err on the side of caution in saying that the watch was 43mm. (43mm is a big move for Rolex and many of the old guard still are not comfortable with it.) Now, almost two years on, and with the market and Rolex fans used to the size increase, Rolex have increased the size of the DEEPSEA (but only in the marketing literature). When you buy your DEEPSEA it will be 44mm........and 43mm. You measure it and you decide what it is. I've never measured mine and I don't think I'll bother as the size will not change whatever the tape says. |

I think he meant to say pull the trigger.
If he pulls the plug then I believe he has decided not to buy. |

Ha, ha...that's the best line. So true...while I will admit I was drawn to the DSSD due to the case increase, I still didn't make a final determination if I was going to buy until after I tried one on. Stats are one thing, yet they don't tell the whole story. I like bigger watches, but there have been numerous watches 44-46mm that I passed on buying because they just didn't look right on my wrist for one reason or another.

Acosspr, I bought my 45mm Planet Ocean about a year before I saw the Deepsea. I love the Omega, but once you try on the Deepsea it really is feels so much better in quality and feels more substantial than the Planet Ocean. (in my opinion)
They are both great watches. I would keep the Planet Ocean and get the Deepsea. The Omega is great, but it already lost alot of trade in value, almost better to keep it. I got the rubber strap for the PO and wear it as my work watch, but the Deepsea is really hard to take off your wrist once you start wearing it everyday. |

The case is slightly tapered. Mine measures 43.01mm at the bezel and 43.59mm at the base, so 44mm would be correct.

Or....you could find a BNIB DSSD from one of many reputable dealers on TRF (or other watch forums) that are selling and probably take one home for around the mid $7K to low $8K's. With a $2K-$3K swing in money out of my pocket, there is no debate on where I would buy today. Good luck. |
