Hey Padi,

That name "Siebe Gorman" rings a bell. I think we have a helmet from that maker in our museum collection.

Shall check it out on my office computer when I go into work this morning (Monday for me!)

JJ
Siebe Gorman Ltd was a famous British company that made and developed diving equipment. They also made frogman's equipment for the British armed forces during World War 11, and later, sport scuba gear. But now gone finished and no more.

The brass helmet is actually a Rolex dealer display for the Submariner. I picked it up in my travels. It's pretty cool.

If it were an actual dive helmet, it would have cost me more than a new Sea-Dweller. Once sold for scrap, they are now extremely hard to come by, and VERY expensive. A few of my friends have them, including somebody I will be seeing tomorrow, but the last time I had a chance to buy one was over six years ago for nearly $3,000 USD.

I was once surrounded by hundreds of them. I gave a speech at the Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, Washington, and I was given a tour of the warehouse afterward. I felt like I was in the closing scene of "Raiders of the Lost Ark," when the Ark of the Covenant is tucked away in an immense warehouse, only this time I was surrounded by old dive gear.

Yes agree David myself would love a old helmet, and like you say now genuine helmets quite expensive. And have seen some very good reproductions around the £400 mark.

Peter,

I was in the presence of three vintage Mark V dive helmets last night, in the office of a client who owes me A LOT of money. Unfortunately, I could not fit one under my coat. Those suckers are heavy!

Hi David yes make you think how ever they used and worked in them.Several years ago around 1995 was doing a rescue diver course in fort Bovi Plymouth. And used one of the old diving helmets with full gear in the harbour.Very strange experience only about 8 meters down,my biggest problem was getting back up the short ladder after.I was absolutely knackered just getting out of the water.

Guys, I was 20 years old at the time. I was getting my VCR repaired in something like a mall but a row of stores close together. Anyway, there was an old guy selling antiques and he had these 2 strange looking helmets. I noticed they said Rolex on them and asked how much. He told me $250 for both. He also had a Chronograph that I believe was a Wittnauer with white dial for $100. I was in undergrad and had no money. If I had $250, i probably would have bought the helmets, but David you mentioned they going for $3,000??? I wish I could go back in time with all the knowledge I have now.

No, the original Mark V dive helmets go for $3,000 and up. See http://www.divedesco.com/subpage.html

Most were sold for scrap after WWII, but a few are still laying around in garages of old Navy divers. They are highly collectable.

The Rolex Submariner display helmet sells for around $300, more if it has a quartz clock in it. These were distributed to Rolex ADs to use as product displays.
