I may "lose" my 1603

Very long story , but it has all to do with the fact when my father died ,he had some money "hidden" from the Belgian tax man at a Luxembourg bank . The most practical solution then was for me to open an account in the same bank and get a vault there as my father did . I then transferred the stuff into my vault and that was it really . When the "official" opening was done , no compromising stuff was found . I used that bank for a while , but haven't lately . With "lately" being about 4 years . I contacted them last week only to find out that the bank has moved to new premisses and as they did not have any active contact number of me , they had to break open the vault and store the contents under sealed envelope at their main branch . I just received a letter this morning stating the costs involved ..horror !!! about 2500 USD in total ( Ok , that is not only the cost of the vault thing , I didn't pay some maintenance costs on the account and the CC got overdrawn and remains unpaid as an insurance I forgot about ) The only valuable thing and that I care about in that "envelope" is my old 1603 . Dilemma ... do I pay the 1.662 Euro or do I let go of the watch ? It needs service and has no documents . I can pick up a nice other one for less .

Depends on how honest you consider yourself.
If you feel the charges are correct and it is your mistake ....

Agree with Dennis, but also how important is that watch to you, was it your Fathers? Something that has been in the family a while? I think that's the biggest decision that needs to be made.

Where Dennis is right in saying it is my mistake , it is true for the CC expenses and maybe to a certain extent the difficulty to contact me . They however didn't put in much effort in trying to locate me . The expenses for drilling open , the bailiff and consequently the storage are just outrageous . The watch I bought myself second hand in 1992 , and has therefor not such an emotional value like if it had been my fathers . I have my fathers Longines watch here with me . It is more of a financial decision then sentimental . I will contact them again on monday and see if they are willing to "adjust"the costs after hearing my arguments .... with the years I have learned that banks are not of the sentimental kind ....

You can't put a price on sentimental value. If it means a lot to you personally, then save it.

Forget the charges and the moral dilemna!! Do you want the watch? IF it has a sentimental value, then pay, otherwise forget it. Banks are constantly hitting us with fees and B/S fees, so I wouldn't feel bad at all if I owed them a meesley 2 grand.

I'm a bit on your wavelength on this one Pep . I will see what they say on monday when I call them . I calculate the commercial value of that watch at about 1500 usd max , all above that they can keep it . I'll wait till they auction it off , might get it even cheaper . I still have the box anyway .

Talk to them and come to a compromise. If you don't pay it will end up affecting your credit rating, after all it is your fault.

I agree with Ozzie. Tell them you are dissapointed they did not go to greater effort to contact you, and suggest they meet you in the middle and pay half. Kill them with kindness, though. Always works for me.

I will say pay the bill and pick up your things. I believe if you look forward and maybe you need to rent a new box
from them in the future (a son use to do like his father) so is it always nice to have a good
relationship with the bank.

I must be missing something. If you don't pay then they will not return any of the items. If the watch is the only item of any value (apart from the items you removed) why did you bother renting a new box and then transfer the remaining items to the new box. Why not just put the watch in your pocket and throw the rest of the items away?

I'm with you. This watch must not mean much, as it sat in a safe for a significant period of time in which you "forgot" about it.
