somebody told me... ??
hey guys,
service related query for you.. I was chatting to the bloke I sold my 16610 to, and was telling him about the lovely TT I was flipping the SS for.. I mentioned that my new watch, although a P serial from 2000, was in pristine condition and it still had the green sticker on... ..he told me that if it still had the green sticker on, it would have never been to an RSC for servicing.. as they would remove the sticker in order to use thier caseback removal tool..? any truth in that? im not too bothered, but reason i ask is.. my 16613 is now 10 years old, if the man speaks truth, my watch should be over due a servcie? (i bought it last month and know nothing of it's history). having said that, should I even worry??? the watch has lost only around 3 seconds in a month, so it keeps great time! (no doubt there will be wise cracks about why I havent removed the sticker already...lol..) |

I don't know whether Rolex would have to remove the hologram during a service, but it makes sense since they're supposed to polish the entire case.
If the watch hasn't been serviced in 10 years, then it's time. It may not be sluggish now, but the oils inside are probably completely broken down, which means each tick is causing excessive wear on the movement.

That doesn't mean, however, that the previous owner didn't have the watch serviced by an independent watchmaker. You really have no way of knowing.

Rolex service has always told me that they can not guarantee that the sticker will not come off--not that they take it off purposefully.

No. Nancy and I bought her son a pre-owned Sub a couple of years ago in recognition of him finishing his second consecutive Ironman Triathlon, and sent it to Rolex Canada in Toronto for an overhaul before giving it to him. We specifically requested them not to remove the sticker, faded as it was, nor refinish the case back. They honoured both requests.

You are lucky--most times they try to do what you ask--they just do not guarantee it. Just my experience every time I have had service--of course I asked also--they also did not remove sticker--I was lucky as well-- (-:

I bought an "A" 1999 Datejust that had the hologram intact but highly worn. After receiving it I immediatley forwarded it to an Independent watchmaker for servicing as it was 10 yrs old. The watch had not been previously serviced but clean and in good shape. He called after opening and said I could get by with less than a full sevice for a few years, I went ahead and had the full service performed and was happy I did after receiving it back. I felt more assured that nothing was going on that could cause a breakdown if I waited. I also had the sticker removed.
