Red Sub gasket question
I was wondering if someone could help me out here.
I have a red sub circa 1970. I had put it away since april 2009 and decided to take it out and wear it this morning. I started to wind it so that I could set the right date. Can someone tell me if there should be a little rubber gasket visible when you release the winder? Seems to me that I remember seeing one there before but now, I'm not 100% sure anymore. Maybe it dried up and fell off? I certainly don't want to get it wet if a gasket is missing. Thanks in advance for any info on this. Chunky

Aw, I had to say that. I'm sorry. At it's birth the RED probably did not have a visible o-ring. It would have started with a twinlock, but if were serviced sometime in the past it would have been upgraded with the triplock with o-ring. Diverdick, one of the real experts on all things Submariner, created this post a while back that is one of the best explanations I've seen. He can do it much better than I. http://forums.timezone.com/index.php...rt=0&rid=29165 |

Sweet.
I should add that it also depends on when everyting came on line. With Rolex nothing is set in stone. My white 1680 originally came with the twinlock. Rolex wastes nothing. |

Both of my 1680's came without the gasket on the tube. When I had them serviced made the choice to have a new crown & tube installed. IMHO, it does little or nothing to the value of the watch, and even if it did affect the value, I still would have changed them out. My guess is that your watch was serviced, but the crown & tube was not changed.

I guess this is really what I need to ask.
Now that I know I am missing this o-ring, should I remove my watch when I shower or wash my hands? Should I be concerned about dirt or dust as well? Would installing a new o-ring entail a full service once again, or can my service man simply snap another one on? Any more advice would be great. Chunky

However, there are still o-rings around the stem inside and one in the crown.. although I wouldn't go diving with it.

I just snapped this picture with my crappy phone. The groove is definately there where the o-ring belongs.
Thanks for your inputs.

Is it smooth at the very end of the tube or is there a space (where the tube should go) then threads? If it is the what I first described, which it also looks like to me, then you have the older original style tube, just get it pressure tested to be sure it is still watertight.

Are the crowns different on the twin compared to the triple? Number of dots?
