First Post and GMTIIc question
Hi guys,
This here is my first post so if I step on some toes, please smile. Right- here goes: I am the proud owner of a two month old TT Daytona and had thought that was the beginning/ end of my Rolex collection as I was more into Omegas. Famous last words! After four weeks of lurking on this forum, I "discovered" I must have me another Rolex. I had focused on a TT Sub (the iconic Rolex) but then thought a TT GMTIIc would give me more bang for my buck. I spoke to my AD about this and he had casually mentioned GMT's had a problem in India because of the 5 1/2 hr time zone issue. I hadn't quite grasped this off-hand remark (and had gone ahead narrowed down my search to the exact model and the day I was going to pick it up) when I happened on an old thread that mentioned just this matter and the cold hard fact: the timezone bezel on the GMTIIc only moves in 1 hour increments. Is that right? Say it ain't so guys! Any advice appreciated- do I go back to the sub? Any work-arounds this half hour issue? And nope, subtracting half hours from time zones will not do! Thanks for reading. |

Yes, this is true! FWIW, it's not very easy telling the time on the GMT II 16710 when the bezel is on the half hour anyway. Look at it this way, since you know the time is on the half hour, you can set the bezel and add or subtract a half hour depending how you set it.

For half hour time zones you always need to subtract (or add) the half hour..
Half hour zones don't rely on the hour hand....Once set, the hour hand will likely be pointing at the right number... It is the minute hand that will always be a half dial off...

It is true but who cares. How often do you really need to need to use the GMT function? If you use it a lot, then like Larry says, just subtract or add the half hour.
Don't let that be a reason not get get such a beautiful watch.

Yup, he is right. When I go to India on business travel, I always wear my Explorer II which has the same 24 hour hand functionality. Unfortunately it is not able to handle the 1/2 hour difference in time. The watch was simply not designed for that. For me it is not that big of an issue though, because I set the normal hands to right time in India and use the 24 hour hand to remind me what time it is back in California - and I just compensate for the 1/2 hour difference. I would not let that discourage you from buying a GMT if you really like the way it looks - it's not that bad. Hope that helps.

Like others have said - not that big an issue once you get used to it.
Subtract or add half an hour, its not that hard. |

Welcome to TRF.
I have to be honest. I never considered this before!!! I travel a lot around europe and go to Cuba on a regular basis so getting a GMT was a no brainer for me. Both watches are great but you have to decide if the 1/2 hour is going to be a problem for you. If not, then buy the GMT and enjoy. I still can't stop looking at mine all the time. uk |

Thanks for the input, guys.
Got to pick up a previously ordered Speedy and then will check out the new blue Sub. If that appeals (I have to see this new powder blue colour personally, the images on their site aren't reassuring) then it's back to the old coin flip. If the blue colour turns me off, the GMT is on again; will post some pics either way. |
