Can you guys give me your thoughts on box and papers and how much that adds or detracts from value for resale?

I'm looking at a couple of Pams, 164, 88 and 86 and I'm trying to get an idea if I should pay a premium for box and papers?

I'm also not looking for an investment piece but one that I can wear and enjoy but would box and papers help me down the road if i decide to flip it?

I wont buy without box/papers. You need the third outer box as well.

Some would buy, but I won't.

The only thing I'll say on this topic is to be really careful if you are considering an incomplete set. Panerai's are much easier to fake than a Rolex is.

Box and papers are a must imo, the third box is an added bonus and not as important. There are some dealers who discard them.

Would you buy a car without a title? If you went to resell that car would you expect to get the true value of the car? No
I'd say that the complete package isn't a premium, but the true value. The incomplete package will always be that. If your just looking to sport the watch, you don't need the papers. If your looking to add it to a collection buy the complete set. It's worth the time looking.

If you want to flip it later (maybe) and have no feedback, you could run into problems without box and papers.

The outer box is IMPORTANT, or at least the sticker on it. (some places in Europe don't do the outer box, but they do include the sticker)

It ties the serial number on the watch to the serial number of the movement.

My AD told me that if I ever wanted to trade up, to bring in the inner green box... said its worth about 150.00.

It depends, certain PAM like A series are so old that maybe the owner don't have the box set anymore, those are the ones that I'll buy without box, but it would be safer to purchase one with box in the later series like J K L, unless it is really proven authentic by AD and have a very sick price then you can consider without box :).

Just my 2cts.

Box and paper people always amaze me...I buy a beautiful watch, the box it came in means nothing to me.. If I can save 200-300 bucks on one without them I would LOVE it.

I buy the watch and authenticate the watch.

Its much easier to fake box and paper than it is to fake a watch.

Comparing a car title to box and papers is kind of irrelevant. Title is legally needed for ownership. box and paper is not.

Would never buy with out box -papers and everything that comes with the watch--any watch--good rule to follow.

The boxes and papers are a consideration when it comes to pricing. I'll pay more for the complete set versus a watch of equal condition without the accompanying box and papers. Having said that, I've bought watches in the past without the complete set (ex. a 141 without the third box... don't care so much about that) and have been very happy with my purchase. So it's all in the eye of the beholder (aka the buyer). But in general, the majority sentiment here I think is shared by most buyers.

Some don't understand - the third box does not usually accompany the watches from non-US AD's... That doesn't make the watch any less complete, IMO. It is just a shipping box.

Exactly. And to add to this the movement sticker, the one that is taped to the third box is most of the times taped to the black box instead.
