replacement Braclet for Gold Rolex DJ

Just a bit of background. I wear my SS Sub most of the time, I was given my Grandfather's 18k DateJust after he passed away. Unfortunantly the original band (an 18k president style band) is in very bad shape. I had the gold band removed and have put on a black leather crock strap. The watch looks great but I really prefer the feal of a metal band on my watches. I am not currently in the position to purchase a new gold band as they are VERY expensive.

I am wondering if anyone has had, or seen the Hadley-Roma President®-Style band? from the web page I have looked at this looks like a pretty nice band and I have considered purchasing it but really don't want to make the watch look bad by putting such a cheep band on it.

I currently don't wear this watch much I had it serviced and it is in perfect working order but I just leave in in the winder since I am not crazy about the leather strap.

Any ideas on what I should do? I would really like to wear it more.

My biggest concern with putting a gold plated SS band on this watch is that the hearder metal would wear the real gold of the watch head down.

Please leet me know you thoughts.

Thanks

Gold DJ issue

Don't do it. Really. DON'T. Firstly, the gold plate color will be very off from the color of the watch head. Secondly, the gold plate will wear off at high rub areas, and you will not be happy with it, at all. The bracelet won't feel right, I can about assure you. I had a gold datejust from the 60's on alligator strap a few years ago. I wish I had kept it, myself. Shop around for a band. PM Steve Mulholland as he is a real good source of replacement parts on here, assuming you haven't already done that. I have seen a few on ebay as well, but like most on here, am a little leery of them. I have bought some good deals of other brands of watches on there, just not rolex. There is a vendor on there that sells italian bracelets for rolex. I have seen his "store" a few times on there. I think its called "watchbandman", I think. The bracelets are solid gold, and about a third the price of replacement rolex bracelets. Give it a try, otherwise, I personally would keep it the way it is. It's a classic dj, and you should keep it forever.

Thanks

That is what iwas thinking. I'll look at those options you mentioned, but for now I'll leave it as is. Just wanted a second opinion.

Additional alternative

I just thought of something else. For a very different and sporty look, go on TimeZone's forum. There's a vendor on there that makes leather straps that are called "raptor" straps. It's essentially two straps in one, but the one touching the skin completely covers the base of the watch. It looks cool as heck, and they show several gold rolexes, albeit daytonas, on it. It would give the dj an entirely different look, I swear. I've been debating it, actually, myself. You've never seen one in person, I guarantee it. Put a black one of those babies on your dj, and you'll wear it a lot more often.

Raptor strap on TZ; vendor name is: Tangochips

The Strap Makes The Watch!

;
The “Raptor” perforated Shell Cordovan strap

Introducing the new Bund XL; based on the smaller Shell Cordovan Bund military style verison I thought it was time to add a little more meat and drama to the basic designt..

Here are the specs:

This Band is massive, but like my other straps, it is also extremely comfortable, even on smaller wrists.

Single layer Bund-pad and single–layer straps assure extreme pliability and support at the same time!

The Bund pad measures 49 mm in width and will accommodate most of your divers and chronographs. The length of the pad is 130 mm and the pad keepers come in at 32 mm’s length!

The strap/lug width, as always is up to you, however, the new Bund Xl will generally accept anything between the 19-23mm range, without any modifications to the pad itself.

This is my new favorite strap!!!

The “COBRA” in black and oxblood!

“The right strap on your watch will not only complete the overall aesthetic appeal of the watch on your wrist, it will create a sense of balance and individuality for the wearer and appeal in the same fashion to those, who view the watch on your wrist from a distance.

The right strap establishes good and selective taste and will not overpower the watch it is attached to. It will create “the perfect frame” , so to speak , for your little mechanical (or non-mechanical) masterpiece.

A watch with the right strap is also more versatile and more likely to go with a greater variety of wardrobe choices, eliminating the extra time spent on what you should wear or which watch should go on your wrist.

Most importantly, the right strap should immediately feel comfortable on your wrist, and reconfirm your sentiment, that the watch you’re wearing is in fact, one of your favorites! You are also more likely to keep the watch, if it is matched to the right strap, instead of contemplating selling or exchanging it for another watch early on...

” This has always been my firm believe since I started collecting and photographing fine wrist watches, which was the key factor in my decision to start making luxury watch straps myself.
The choice of material was simple: Shell Cordovan, which is the finest, most comfortable, but also the densest, most water resistant and among the toughest leathers in the world! Many of my designs are military inspired, such as the as 3-piece Bund-style straps, the open rivet and the ‘Cobra”, as those are built for practicality, toughness, and most importantly, comfort!!! This is the reason why I don’t use any other leather for my straps, than Shell Cordovan.

Product News Update, November 13, 2009; Introdcung the new Shell Cordovan 3-Piece “Raptor” strap!

Product News Update, September 02, 2009: I now offer the traditional 2-piece Shell Cordovan straps in one-layer and two-layers, in oxblood, whiskey and black. Optional contrast or matching stitching.

Product News Update, August 21, 2009: The popular Cobra, 3-piece Bund-style, "Open-Rivet Screw" and regular 2-piece straps are now die-cut for a truly (near) perfect cut and fit! Detailing work including conditioning and finish is being still done by hand.

Product News Update, August 05, 2009: I am pleased to offer, by popular demand, the 3-piece Bund-style Shell Cordovan in the traditional military style, with even length straps (20/20mm, 22/22mm).

In addition, I offer these 3-piece straps in two finishes: matching colors on the bottom (black/brown), and natural (only the sides are painted). These straps are still one-layer designs, but have a more massive overall appearance, which is great for vintage or military inspired watches.

Product News Update, July 21, 2009: New colors available now (limited quantities): "Oxblood" (dark reddish brown), "Whiskey" (medium chestnut- rich and amazing!!!).

New for June 2009: The massive “Cobra” integrated 1-piece design! ;;;;
Avilable now; Shell Cordovan straps in Black, Oxblood and Whiskey!

I’m excited to introduce my newest design in Shell Cordovan, the
“RAPTOR” 3-piece strap.

This strap combines the unique aspects of the 3-piece Bund style strap and the sharp looks of the Cobra, all in a 3-piece construction, which is designed to keep the strap as comfortable on your wrist, as possible.

As with my other straps, only the finest Shell Cordovan hides are being used for this entirely handmade and handstitched design, which has been sized and proportioned to fit most current sports and divers watches in the 40-44mm range.

The width of the base-pad is apporximately 35mm wide by 125mm long, which wraps entirely around the wrist, keeping the buckle away and off the skin for wearing comfort, which is second to none. Lug to lug on the strap is about 37mm. This distance between the lug keepers changes once the strap is curved around your wrist.

Special sizing, lug-distance and pad width/length can be ordered at no additional charge.

The pad tapers down to a narrower width by the clasp, giving the entire ensemble a very sleek and aerodynamic appeal.

All edges are rounded off and the leather has been treated for additional water-resistance, although it is not recommende to take this strap in the water.

The “RAPTOR” is available in black, whiskey and oxblood. Color and stitch combinations are as pictured below but can be changed to your preference at no extra charge.

Please note that the standard width strap comes with (2) strap keepers (one fixed, one floating), the wider version comes with (1) wider (fixed) keeper.

This is my most advanced and comfortable strap to date, I hope you like it as much as I do!

Price: $ 325,00 plus shipping and salestaxes (if applicable).
Turnaround time for each strap is 2-3 weeks.

2-piece single layer: $ 195,00 (choice of stitch or “NO STITCH “ (not shown)

;;
The popular 3-piece Bund-style is now available with no-stitch straps! As my quest to create the most comfortable straps in the world continues, it is ultimately my goal to do so by keeping the designs as simple as possible. Less is more...there should be a reason for every stitch, if you don’t need one, skip it!

I am proud to introduce my new “Almost-No-Sticth” 3-piece Bund-style strap, which features no stitching at the strap lugs for a cleaner, more stealth appeal. By using a special glue and glueing method, these straps are held together so tightly at the ends, that stitching is not necessary, unless of course your preference is “with stitch” for visual appeal.
The already simple and minimalist design of my Bund-style straps become even more simple, therefore being able to fly even “lower” under the Radar. In addition to the no-sticth approach, I’m also using wider strap keepers to give these straps a more solid look at the same time, also keeping the straps more snug to the pad at the same time.

Try also using the “ no stitch” straps without the Bund Pads and you’ll fully appreciate this new minimalist strap! “Almost-Sticthless” Bund-style strap:

A frequent question I’ve been receiving is whether my 3-piece / 1-layer are rugged enough for hard use and are durable... The answer is yes, however, since these are made with the toughest leather around, they are still made of one-layer, which will naturally stretch more than a double-layered strap - (therefor the added comfort to the wrist).

That’s is why I use a thicker hide for additional strength. On the other hand, a strap with two layers is thicker and will last longer if abrasive wear is factor... the more material, the longer it will take to wear it out!
My 3-piece straps are as tough as they get for a one- layered strap; but they are also as comfortable as can be and designed to work with not only military watches, but also luxury watches, which are typically seen on bracelets or reptile straps. Still, I’ve been getting many requests for double-layer straps, where toughness and durability are more important than comfort...why not have both?!!!

Introducing the new Shell Cordovan Cordovan integrated 1-piece design!

;

My latest design, the “Cobra” (for obvious reasons:), is intended for those who want absolutely the best, toughest, longest wearing and most comfortable strap available!

;
IWC Big Pilot on the new Cobra Shell Cordovan

It is composed of 2-full layers of the thickest and softest shell cordovan, and features integrated lug-keepers, extra-wide strap keepers, and an oversized length, which will fit on a wrist of 6” up to 8-3/4”, without the need to switch from one size to another.

I use almost (1) entire Shell Cordovan hide for one single “Cobra” strap, as all parts used come from the same skin.

;

The overall length of the “Cobra” is 11-1/4 inches, with a width of about 45mm and 18mm at the buckle. The lugs can be sized to your specifications (18, 19, 20, 22, 24mm, etc...)

;
The integrated lug keepers, mean that there is no need to separate the strap at any point, allowing the leather to contact the wrist without any interruption...you guessed it, added comfort!!!

;

Another unique feature of the integrated keepers is a special stitching I use to attach them inside the strap; this allows the keepers to slightly stretch out if you are planning on wearing different watches with a different lug-to-lug size.

;
The unique profile of the “Cobra” Shell Cordovan strap.

;
The “Cobra” in black and oxblood with copper stitching.

;
The Cobra in oxblood and black.

;
Top and bottom views of the Cobra in black and oxblood.

;
The new Cobra in Oxblood with copper stitching is all about lines! The basic measurement from keeper to keeper on the “Cobra” (basically lug hole to hole of your watch) is 50mm’s, which will accommodate a Submariner or a larger watch of up to 45mm’s in diameter. The spacing of the loops inside the keepers is roomy to allow for a larger watch. It is just amazing how adaptable this strap is in regards to different watch sizes- Once the strap is closed and curved around your wrist, the watch, no matter what size is snug and centered on your wrist!

;
The extra wide Strap k eeper: a feature that simply results in a tighter and more secure fit of your strap end-it also looks immensely cool, imo...

;

(sorry, buckles are not included as I don’t stock them). The bottom line with the “Cobra” : In terms of toughness and longevity, this is it, this as tough as it gets!!! If there is one strap, you would like to wear as your only strap, on a daily basis, the “ Cobra” is your strap.
As with all Shell Cordovan straps, it will also only get better and more comfortable with age, and might even outlast your watch...(hopefully not).

Note: Please note that the buckles are for illustration purposes only, and are not included.

Special Requests and Options: Upon request, I’ll be happy to incorporate (2) wide strap keepers, instead of one: I can also (standard) use (1) skinny, and (1) wide (approx. 1 inch), or just one keeper.

Optional is also the width at the buckle; The standard width is 18mm, but can be requested as 16mm or 20mm. For Paneristi, I can also custom size a 24 or 26mm width at the buckle. Additionally, I can make a wider “Cobra” , 50mm or even more, if you are intending on mounting an xl sized watch; length can be changed as well. Please specify when ordering.
Price: $ 395.00 + shipping (and 9.25% CA salestax, if shipped within CA).

;
The “Cobra” combines style with amazing comfort and ultimate toughness!

;
Detailed of 3-piece Shell Cordovan strap

My watch straps are made of a slightly softer, and more pliable Shell Cordovan, (than my custom knife sheaths, for instance). I incorporate several unique design features, which take quite a departure from the classic 3-piece military design.

;
The 3-piece military strap in “ Oxblood”.

;
3-piece Bund-style in “Oxblood”.

;
Bottom view of the 3-piece “Oxblood” strap.

The basic 3-piece straps are slightly more tapered, than squared off at the buckle, to add a touch of elegance to the otherwise rugged appearance. This works particularly well with popular high-end sports and luxury watches, such as the Submariner, Daytona, or Flieger/Pilots chronographs offered by many top manufactures.

Also, by using a slightly narrower strap, the attention to the watch itself doesn’t get lost. The watch pad is sized to accommodate most watches of up to 42 mm. The crown side oF the pad is slightly wider, keeping the crown from cutting into your wrist.

In addition to a one-layer shell ( instead of 2 layers, that are glued together), I use a special process during production, which reduces the bulkiness of the leather even more, making the strap unbelievably soft and pliable - when you place the strap on your wrist for the first time, you’ll get the sense, that the strap has already been worn for months and is perfectly broken in.

I’m confident to say, that once you wear your watch on one of these straps, you will not want to take it off, again! Also, I attach strap loops onto each pad, instead of cutting through the wrist pad to accommodate for attaching the strap.
This is added work, of course, but again, the difference in comfort to this design is much improved, since the pad hugs your wrist entirely, without any interruption of material.

All the edges of the straps are beveled and rounded off, to avoid the strap from “cutting” into your wrist. Upon finishing each strap, I use a special dyeing process for the back, and treat each strap for additional softness, water resistance, and longevity.

;
Vintage Vulcain “Triple-Triple” chronograph on 3-piece “Widemouth”).

The pad of the "Widemouth" is wider at the lugs, to allow for a wider, more contoured strap to be fitted, giving the entire strap a more tapered "Flow" to the overall design.
The complex, yet sophisticated design of the Widemouth strap is a perfect fusion between the standard style military watch straps and the very popular cuff-style leather watch straps. I don’t stock any straps, each strap is custom made to order, with a 2-3 week turn around time.

Custom made orders: I welcome custom orders for a particular or favorite watch of yours, but would require exact dimensions and specs of the watch (pics help!), in order to create a template and specific design.
Turnaround time for these types of custom orders is 4-6 weeks, with an additional cost of $ 125.

Extra-thick straps: For those, who prefer a beefy and extremely rugged version of the strap (for watches over 40 mm), I do offer the option to make the strap of two layers of Shell, which will add $75 to the cost of a single-layer strap. Note on Double-Layer straps:

I don’t recommend using 2-layers for watches under 40 mm, as I use the full thickness of the hide (not “thinned” or skived”); since this is a custom made strap for big watches, I will need the actual watch, to ensure a perfect fit and feel!

Prices, Styles and Sizes:

3-piece “Bund” military style design, $ 275.00
3-piece “Bund” " Widemouth " military style design, $ 275.00 (+ shipping and 9.25% CA salestax, if shipped within CA)

Available Sizes (width in mm, lugs/buckle): At the lugs: 18-22mm At the buckle: 16-20mm

Note: Upon request, this strap can also be purchased without the military “Bund” pad, at $ 175.00.

Thickness: Hides range from 2-3 mm’s. Lengths: Small (fits up to a 7” wrist) Medium, ( up to 7-3/4 “ wrist) Large ( up to 8-1/2 wrist) Note: The “ Widemouth” features additional holes on a longer strap, which can be worn from a 6-3/4 inch wrist all the way up to a 9” wrist (or on a sleeve).

NEW: Ultra thin 2-piece Shell Cordovan “Paper”!!!....$195.00

Since Shell Cordovan is the densest leather in the world, I’ve created a paper thin strap of only about 1 mm in thickness (!!!), without the risk of tearing the strap. This strap is unbelievably pliable, and is perfect for the thinnest and flattest of watches on earth!!!

These hides are reserved for dress watches only, as only (1) out of (20) hides are thin and pliable enough, to qualify for application.
The additional steps of dyeing the leather, beveling the top and bottom edges for wearing comfort, and treating these for extra softness an d water-resistance, are applied, of course, making these straps truly exceptional in softness and feel! For those, who always wanted a custom sized ultra thin Shell Cordovan strap for their elegant and prized time pieces…here you go!!!

Pictures did not come through

I was trying to send the pictures of the Daytona and the Submariner with that last link. They didn't make it. You ought to go on there and see for yourself. You can get the narrower of the straps for the dj. It wouldn't be as wide as the ones for the daytonas and subs. Just a thought. I'm out of ideas, so good luck to you. If you ever want to sell that dj, let me know. I'd love to have another one again.

Thanks for the info. I do agree that the watch looks fantastic on the black strap. I just personally like the feel of a metal braclet better. I wear by gold DJ when ever I need something a little dressy. I just don't like how it dosen't move around. I am so use to my Sub with metal band that has some movement to it. I will probably never be able to change it to an original Rolex 18k band unless I can find a good used one. I have looked at some of the aftermarket 18k bands which seem to be about 1/3rd the cost of the true replacement from rolex.

Thaks again for all the info you have been very helpful and I will not purhcase the cheep fake band for my watch.

Have you considered having the original bracelet repaired. Check out www.classicwatchparts.com

Michael Young is the owner and has had many excellent recommendations from people on this forum as well as on some other forums dedicated to vintage Rolexes. It will probably cost approximately 1/3 the cost of an Italian 18K bracelet, depending on how much work it needs.

DISCLAIMER: I have no financial interest in this company - only a very very satisfied customer. Michael Young repaired my 30 year old President bracelet last year.

I wouldn't recommend the Hadley Roma or any other plated replacement..

Many older Presidents are put on the very well made Italian 18 or 14k aftermarket bracelets.. They are about half the price of the Rolex version.. I believe that the original clasp can also be fitted onto them...

There is a seller on eBay selling aftermarket President bracelets (no Rolex or other markings) that are solid 18k for $3100.00. I'm not sure how much a Rolex 18k president is? If you want the seller PM me and I'll send his info.

There maybe some sellers here that can get the real deal for close to that price, def. post up in the wanted to by section what you need. Never know?

Thanks
A DJ with a Presidental bracelet. That is a very rare Rolex. The most noted watch is the Eisenhower Rolex. I would use a leather strap and save the funds to have a good restorer work their magic on the bracelet.
