What year did Rolex introduce the biiger box with cream outer box?

Pretty straightforward - they went from the small box with the pillow and the brown suede-like flaps to the bigger textured box with crown with the cream suede interior and big outer box - what year?

Got a line on swapping my older box for a newer box (I like the bigger box better than the old - the watch flops around on the pillow but is held frimly in placy by the insert of the newer boxes- how much increased value does an original box impart in an aftermarket sale in your opinion? I am a nut about having the matching papers and any service receipts - as those are almost impossible to forge indicators that the watch is authentic...

But the box? What say you all?

That will hurt your resale value, not help it. You should have the appropriate box, tags, papers for your type of watch.

I would buy the newer box, ($100-$150) and keep the original.

Can't even get an opening bid on the Flying Spur.

Do you want to buy it, I'll throw in a new box for you.

I'd love to, but my limo is already blocking the parking spot...

Well the papers are the easiest to forge and even if the watch flops about on the pillow no harm will come to your watch in a box.The box IMHO is little of importance over a genuine watch I would just keep your original box.

Really?

I've seen hundreds of the fake papers over the years - and I've never seen a set which passed even a cursory exam - a fake set with the right typewriter font for the serial number and model number? Never.

Matched with the green tag with the serial number and service papers with the same number and your talking some seriously talented forgery.

If you get to that level of forgery, you're better off forging money.

As to your original question, I don't know when the earliest big boxes were started but, I have a very late "F" Sea Dweller that was sold new in November 2005 that has the large box set, if that helps.

I thought the newer style boxes started showing up around 2004 - 2005 or so. IMO the box is of little importance on the newer models because the newer boxes are so readily available, but a nice plus on older models, especially if they're the actual original correct box. If your watch rattles around in the older style box you could always just use a thin layer of soft foam over the watch and then close the box like many manufacturers use.

Correct Early F series have the older box with the horseshoe insert(not-pillow) and later F series have the new green wave boxes.

theres more than one size 'new' box....

there are three 'new' box arrangments. One like you describe is small, one is larger, and the other is largest. The small comes with many womens watches, DJ/DJII's and some of the professional watches like the sub, gmt II, and explorers. the large box comes with the SD, DSSD, and the steel daytona. The largest come with all gold daytonas, and the Day-Dates.
