These are a few of my favourite things ...

I was six years old when I first came across the works of Richard Ellis. By that time, a certain Mr Spielberg had made sharks to me what dinosaurs were to Calvin, but over and above that the quality of Ellis' art grabbed my attention.

I recently purchased a copy of Ellis' "Great White Shark" off Amazon and figured I may as well combine four things that I am interested in: sharks, Ellis' work, Rolexes and photography. Here's the result:

Thanks, Paul! I brought back a fair chunk of work this weekend, and after all that number-crunching I had to get a bit of Yin to go with the Yang.

very nice James. I love the dorsal fin on the shark, looks a bit battle scarred.

The way he's created the light playing on the back of the shark is nice too.

Yeah, his attention to detail is great. Here are some more examples of his work:

A great book James and a fantastic and powerful perfect predator but a little understood animal the great white shark. And afraid that movies like Jaws done more harm for the shark, than the shark will ever do to man.And as soon as there is any shark related incidence its blown up by the press.Sharks are wild animals, and like domesticated animals they sometimes bite. After all man invades the sharks territory, the shark don't invade ours on land.Once had a very close encounter with a Tiger shark, yes it scared the #### out of me.But it did not make me want to kill or harm it,but respect it after all I was in her domain the sea.Great picture and subject James.

Yup, Peter, I expected you'd be one of the guys who would appreciate this thread!

I agree - if someone comes invading your living room, you'd get the shotgun out, so why's it gotta be different for a shark?

...and the shark has remained virtually unchanged for a million years. Almost the perfect animal.

Very nice thread.

Well done, James. Have to agree with ALL that Padi said on the subject.

How quick man is to blame one stray incident on the poor shark....but forgets about the millions of sharks that mercilessly hooked by fishermen, pulled out of the sea, had their dorsal, ventral and tail fins chopped off for a the famous shark fin soup and then the same shark thrown callously back into the sea to be devoured by the others.

The worst predator on earth: MAN!!

I remember seeing "Jaws" when I was 10 and being both fascinated and scared to death of sharks ever since. Now I use them as a theme for my law firm's web site, with an outstanding shot of a Great White on the home page. Some people get it, while others don't. Great stuff.

Totally agree JJ the shark has since movies like Jaws recieved very bad press. And the total attacks on man world wide is around 70 with the most by the bull shark.Believe there are more attacks on humans by the big cats like the Tigers, but they dont seem to get the bad press the shark does.Perhaps its the world wide factor that promote this type of animal as a cuddly toy.But animals like the shark, snakes and even spiders are promoted as evil.Afraid like JJ said, its man thats evil, and not the dumb animals

Yup, Peter, it's all a matter of perception. Personally, I think that sharks, especially the great white, are examples of some of mother nature's most brilliant engineering. One of these days I'd love to do a shark cage dive and see a great white close up. Speaking of which, has anyone heard from Fernando lately?

JJ, I admit I have a soft spot for shark's fin soup, but the good news is that these days they're making imitation stuff from stingrays which is virtually the same and a helluva lot cheaper to boot.

Yes James Fernando has been quite busy with a new business as well as the fish. But he don't contact me much lately, had a email from him about a week ago.Yes agree about the white shark, around 8 years ago one was spotted in Valletta harbour Malta. And many believe they come to the Med to breed, sharks are as perfect predators as you can get. Most as soon as a tooth breaks another pops into place.Myself have a admiration for the shark, and feel privileged to have seen quite a few in there underwater world. And in the sharks world his only real predator is man directly, and indirectly by fishing, getting caught in nets etc Just had a long chat with Fernando he is fine, just caught up in a lot of paper work with his new business.

Cool stuff, Peter - do ask Fer to pop in and say hi once in a while if you speak to him!

As for predators, I couldn't agree more. Personally, if I were ever to go hunting there's only one animal I'd go for - no prizes for guessing which it is.
