Icon20 Submariner, 2009/2010

Hi all,

I'm new to the Rolex forum and have owned Breitlings for years, just recently I've decided that a classic submariner is a must have watch, therefore I've started to look into buying one, if this question has been asked before please bare with me, but can someone help? I went to my local Rolex dealers on Saturday tried the green bezel 16610LV and the black submariner 16610, both had no engraving on the inside of the bezel, I've seen some pics and some have rolex engraved on the inside of the bezel, why is this? are they (new) old models? I'm aware the gold, white gold and two tone have this but was unaware the same applied to the SS Submariner.

Thanks in advance for your help.....

Ceb, welcome to TRF.

All the latest 16610's, both the LV and LN versions have an engraved rehaut. There may still be some earlier releases around that do not have it, but it is surprising that you would find two new ones in the same shop that way..

Are these new and in an Authorised Dealer............

Hi, thanks for your reply, Yes both at an independent authorised dealer.......should these older models be priced more competitively, the LV was £4070 and the LN £3820?
Thanks

Hi Ceb, that is the list price for both watches. If you are paying list price I would get the newest watch you can, at least a V serial no. You may be able to get money off for an older model.

What did you prefer between the black Sub and the LV?

I bought a new Sub in December 2007 and that had the Rolex Rolex Rolex. These watches must be quite old as "new" stock. The dealer will have paid significantly less all that time ago. In Dec 2007 an LV was about £3000 to buy!!
If you are paying full price get brand new stock. Just think how many people will have handled the watches over the years, maybe some not so careful as you.

You need to check what serials the watches have and see if you can get a discount based on your knowledge that if they are Z series or earlier they may be new old stock. However I am surprised that two popular models have been sitting for such a while in an AD's store.

Personally, I would be happy to pay RRP for a Sub without that branded rehault and a full warranty but if you can get a discount good luck.

Not to mention the thought of having to service the watch sooner...

They must be pre 2007 models. D serial or earlier. The dealer should discount at least 10-15% on it.

You'll be fine. I live in Bangkok and bought my lovely 16610 at a reputable dealer here (also had it checked out at the SC - it was in brilliant condition). As in all major Asian cities, there is a huge trade in legit Rolexes here - e.g. Leng Watch Co., etc. The fakes are for tourists. Price seems a little high, but the Baht is stong now. Also, boxes and papers are never available here, so no issue with that.
