Tag Link vs Daytona SS
My wife gave me a Tag Heuer Link for my retirement last year and after wearing a Timex for many years I realized how special it was to wear quality timepiece.
I enjoyed the Tag so much I decided this week (after a lot of research) to purchased another quality watch and that was a Rolex Daytona SS. The Daytona SS is a beautiful watch but is a little smaller and a little plainer than the Tag Link. I absolutely love it though and I had to convince my wife that I would not loose interest in my Tag Link. I assured her I loved my Tag and would never toss it aside. At this point it is still my favorite and its actually on my wrist now. I was sitting around last night admiring both watches and I had to wonder why the Daytona SS was $8000 more expensive than my Tag Link. After all the Tag was gold/SS and a very beautiful watch and the Daytona SS is a little less striking and is all SS with no gold. I don't know how the movements compare in quality. As a person who knows very little about watches I am wondering why the big difference in price ? I suppose its like buying a BMW and a Ford, BMW's are a more expensive automobile and you pay a premium for the BMW name. When trying to decide what Rolex I would purchase I heard that the Daytona SS was a little less available than other Rolex's because Rolex controls the number they give to AD's each year. I wonder what would happen to the value of a Daytona SS if Rolex didn't control the numbers and they were sold like any other Rolex ? Would the value drop significantly or would it hold its value ? Is the price of these watches being kept artificially high because of Rolex limiting quantities ? Is my SS Daytona worth $8000 more than my Tag Link ? I hope someboby can give me a good reason why it is. |

If you can get $8000 more for your Daytona than you can for your tag then it is worth $8000 more; If you can't it isn't.

You are the one who bought it, why don't you tell us why it was "worth" $8,000.00 premium over your Tag to you?
Not sure what answer you are looking for...or the point you are making. Short answer is supply vs. demand, like any other item in an open market. I hope that helps...but I sense it's not the answer you are looking for. -Pete

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Did you pay the $8000 for just the hype or what set it apart to you? I think the Daytona is the best looking Rolex so that's why I own one.

By the way, congrats on the new watch. I doubt you'll wear the Tag once you get fully addicted to Rolex. It seems to happen very easily.

I just looked at your Tag and it seems like an attractive piece. Daytona's, however are produced in limited numbers and command a premium unlike Tags. It is the only chrono Rolex produces and is reasonably priced for a luxury brand. Your Daytona will also hold value much better than the Tag.

Hmmmn...firstly congrats on both watches...the Tag has a much more sentimental attachment for you..and in those terms should hold a special place in your heart!
This is a Rolex forum (primarily)...asking the question you have here is going to get pretty straight forward replies...no disrespect to Tag...but Rolex are in a different league.. Why.... it's all up to the individual...much like most things that exude class... You chose to buy a SS Daytona....one of the most talked about and somewhat controversial watches (price wise) - especially round these parts...you could have chosen a GMT2c...or a Sub...for much much less... So tell us...Why the Daytona for you out of the Rolex available?

Tag has no resale value, the Daytona does.
It is worth the $8K extra.

It's like you said, BMW and Ford, one is a Rolex and the other is just a TAG. It's that simple Congrats on the Daytona

Welcome to TRF and congrats on both watches.
As far as movements go, the Daytona is reputed to be fitted with the 4130 calibre which is considered by many to be the world's best Chrono movement. The TAG would possibly be fitted with an ETA movement. Mind you, nothing wrong with the ETA movements, but no comparison with what's inside the Daytona. Just enjoy them both in good health. Price wise, you will always find Rolex much more expensive than TAGs. Cheers and hope you enjoy your stay on this forum. JJ
