More appropriate for dressier attire...
the Submariner or the Explorer II in business casual/dressier situations?
The Sub under a suit jacket or shirt cuff appears to be a classic look that is tough to beat, while the understated, smooth bezel Explorer II looks pretty sharp in the same scenario ... which do you prefer and why? |

I've worn both with a suit as well as a tux and have never felt under dressed (under watched?) in either. And my Explorer II is a white dial.
I guess most folks don't even notice what watch you're wearing, so it's all a matter of which watch makes you feel good for a particular event.

Of the two presented, I'd probably go Sub. I tend to wear DJ with formal attire and Sea-Dweller for casual, though that's not a hard and fast rule. I'd wear the SD with a suit or the DJ with shorts if I felt like it.
Most people are very out of touch with the fashion and etiquette "rules" of the past, and would be unlikely to notice. I was at a wedding a couple weeks back, and the bride's father was wearing a G-Shock with his black tux at an evening event. |

At times it seems, when a person dresses up, that they need to change their watch. You are a very fortunate person to be able to choose from two CLASSICS!
You can't go wrong with either! |

The truth is a SS Rolex can be worn with anything. I wear my GMT-Master IIc to the office with a suit and it doesn't look out of place at all. Plus I can dress it down on weekends with shorts and flip-flops. Now a TT Rolex is a little different. They're great for the office or wearing with formal wear, but they tend to look a little out of place in casual settings...

If you take a look at the Rolex web site, and go to the new 2010 watch section, there is an interesting photograph depicting a gentleman dressed in an expensive suite wearing the new Submariner.....also the caption reads: "A Power of Seduction that's never out of style". I think that answers the question
However, in my opinion...either the Explorer or Sub have the same impact. |

x2 I will add that I think the sport modesl and SS models can dress up or down and work with anything from jeans and a t-shirt to a tuxedo. I have seen gold Rolex with jeans and t-shirt combo and think it looks a bit silly - especially on a "younger" person. JMHO. But, overall - it's a Rolex, it's never under dressed. -Pete

I would go with a DJ or DJII for the dressy and a sport watch such as Sub or SD for a casual look.

I read in this forum... in a suit, anything with a bracelet is not proper, a leather strap is what is called for. I guess in Europe and North America, that is the proper etiquette. I like in the tropics, and while we also wear business suits, most of the time a bracelet is a better choice. Fine leather straps do not last too long here. So I guess, practical considerations weigh in. Back in the day, the most common dress watch was a Seiko on a bracelet. Leather has made a comeback in the past few years because of increasing popularity of Philippe Stein, Panerai and IWC.
For as long as the watch has "restrained" (black, blue, gold, silver) colors, it should do fine. An LV would look out of place IMHO. So would anything on nylon or rubber straps. Sports watch for dress, between the two I would pic the Sub. Why? I am not sure, it just looks better to me. |
