Dont know Ashley think if I remember it was something about bandwidth and a server issue/cost and was abandoned.

correct Peter, the chat program had to be added and then the one we had had some issues like $$ to pay for it as it was not a free addon so, I think Mark canned the idea.

Ya, I would think its bandwidth as well. I think the skype approach is the best or via MSN if everybody (or those who wishes to participate) shared their msn handles.

:) thanks for the answer, Padi and Earl.

As for this Skype some are speaking of, I've never heard of it before. I take it is somewhat like MSN?

It's voice over IP - it's like using a phone through your computer. There is also a messaging system that goes with it.

Yes....and using a headset is best as it keeps out sounds arround you. I have a combination headset that includes a mic. Costs about $40 Canadian....

Ashley,

Al is spot-on about the headset thing.

All you need to do is click on www.skype.com and download it. Then try and contact your friends and ask them for their user names on SKYPE. Once you've added their names to your contact list, you guys can chat for hours and hours......all for FREE.

JJ

I use skype to chat with friends when we play online games and IMHO it is decent, well for PC user such as myself.

I think it all depends on the type of headset you have and how far it is you are from the person that you're communicating with.

I know for sure skype won't be as good when you chat with someone in Asia for example (1. Too far, 2. Data communication may not be as good).

As Avalon has stated, it has both voice and messaging services. MSN has those too.

I have not really used it much outside of North America, but even chatting with a guy I know on Salt Spring Island on the West coast who is on dial up, it works pretty well. I find it's when you get too many people on at once or if someone is using one of those speakerphone things rather than a headset that things get dicey.

I chat with quite a few guys spread out across the USA as well as my sister in Bombay - no problems at all....clear as bells....even better and more distinct than a phone call.

Not necessarily. At present NZ is +13 GMT....so you can do the math when you compare how much behind GMT your place is.

I talk with all my American friends during my afternoon which is around supper time for them!!

I know that I am +18 hours ahead of the Eastern Coast of USA....so all I do is add 6 hours to my time to know their present time (but of course they are still a day behind!!)

Hope all of the above doesn't sound too complicated.

JJ
