Winding problem?
After "swirling" to get second hand moving, I noticed that winding felt "light"; almost too easy. I could hear the "clicks" when turning crown counter clock wise but nothing when turning clock wise. After 25-30 winds, I did not feel any initiation of resistance as I normally would. Screwed crown back down and tried to wind again. Did this a couple of times with the same result. I then "swirled" about 40 times and set current date and time. On a whim, I re-set the date through the entire wheel. Now, I can feel the resistance in winding (as I should after "swirling" that many times).
I do not wear it everyday. This past Sunday was the last time I wore it and power reserve ended around 10:00AM on Tuesday. It's a 6MIL DD (18078) last serviced by Dallas RSC in late Aug. 2009 for warranty work from NY RSC, but out of original warranty from NY RSC. What could cause for the watch not to manually wind initially, but do so after re-setting the date through the entire wheel? Any and all input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Peter |

Sounds as if the return bar is not properly engaging the clutch wheel with the winding pinion unless it is first put in the date position. Return bar spring weak/cracked or corrosion somewhere? Maybe? Tylden.

Sounds like the wigwag gear got stuck it happens sometimes on all Rolexes. They all have a form of a centrifugal wigwag gear for winding the mainspring well except the 1500 series. Rik

Thanks for the info!!! Although, I do not know what these things are .
Is this something I will need service on? Is there a potential for damage, serious or otherwise, within the inner workings? Again, thanks in advance!!! |

Well on the 3135 calibre the wigwag is a floating gear that when the crown is turned in the winding mode it sort of cantilevers toward the ratchet wheel that winds your watch.Once the teeth mesh it winds now if it gets stuck and doesn't completely engage the ratchet wheel you could do some damage to the teeth on the ratchet wheel which are brass. vs. steel on the wigwag gear. I would have it looked at for piece of mind shouldn't cost 35 dollars for an inspection. Rik

Hi. The problem as originally described doesn't suggest a wig-wag problem as putting the stem into date/time setting would have no effect on the wig-wag wheel. No, I still think the stem area is where the problem is. I await the report once it has been corrected. Tylden.

Update
Since my original post, I have had the oppotunity to wind it twice. Both times I did not encounter the original issue. I can now hear the mainspring? winding. I will continue to keep an ear out and await if the problem persists. If it does, I will send it in for service.
Rik & Tylden, THANK YOU for your input. I realize it's hard to diagnose without actually looking at the watch. Thanks again. Peter |
