A collection of just 1 or 2 ''specials'' ?

Inspired by a well respected member of the Dutch Rolex Forum I would like to start this thread.

By now I have collected 5 Rolex watches and needless to say that I am more than happy with them.



But every time I open my watchbox I get this restless feeling inside...what watch do I wear today?
In the morning I pick one for wearing that day and right after I close the vault I start thinking that maybe that other one should get some wrist instead...
And then the vault opens again..

So here the question for you all..

Do you want/need to switch watches once or twice a day or do you want that big grail we are all after?

A Panda Daytona or a DDSD..

What are your thoughts on this one?

Hello GJ,

that's an interesting topic you raise here. I have had the same problem with my 10+ Rolex and finally, there is one model which definitely gets most wrist time: The one which speaks most to me, a comfortable one, very accurate and CLASSIC: The 14060m.
Now, I am a believer and do not change any more. Maybe I should sell the rest of my collection, especially all these non-Rolex watches.....

I hear what your saying. My wife will chastise me because I'll stand in front of the safe with the door open listening to the Siren's Song. The one that has the strongest pull draws me in, usually determining what I will wear for the day as well.

That said, my Sea Dweller has dominated my wrist over the last year and if I were to drop down to one or two specials, the dweller would be number one. The 14060M I've haven't gotten yet would be number two. I know they are similar in appearance, but for me, the attraction is the connection to the early Bond films. I know that wearing the watch doesn't make me 007, but it takes me back to those years of my youth. The adventures that we had growing up, we were adolescent James Bonds in our own way.

Geez that was maudlin...but there you have it. Good question.

I have only 3 pieces(one non Rolex) now (had 5 in the early years).
Indeed i have the same restless feeling.
I am jealous over the fact that some people only have one that satisfy too.
For example only a dj or sub/ex2.

I've become a one Rolex guy. Took kissing a lot of frogs to get here though...

been thru DJ's DD, GMT's, Subs, TT and SS of most, and finally settled back where I started at the Sea Dweller.

Indestructible (within reason), rare, bulletproof proven movement, black and SS style fits with suits or jeans, comfy, solid feel, SEL's, easily repaired, and likely to be worth more in 30 years when I keel over and my kids paw thru my stuff.

And just plain neat.

I have a few and often go back to the safe and switch out before I change my mind again. There are few three more I'm looking for in my collection but those will wait for now. I think I would sell all my non Rolex to achieve this and would be happy. We shall see I mean I wore three different just last night.. ;)

I am in a "consistent wear pattern".
Mon thru Thurs I wear my 16710 - for work
Thurs evening I switch to my 14060 as this represents the entry to my weekend.
The 14060 stays on Fri at work - thru Sun night.
When we go to church, or when I wear a sport coat (infrequently) I wear a Zenith dress watch.

Last Monday I wore the 14060 to work - I felt a like I was cheating on my 16710...

Great collection ! I have 6 and prefer variety and usually wear 3 in a bi-monthly rotation. I switch one or two watches in the rotation. Currently, I am wearing - SD, Explorer 1 and 14060. Recently, I have been contemplating selling off a few and only keeping one or two. But, which ones ? The torment goes on...

I trimmed the collection.......I now have 5 Rolexes & 7 other watches.....I wear 2 per day....gives all a little wrist time & love.
I am pretty much done for a while......unless I hit the lotto.......or have another useless body part to sell....I'm thinking.....my brain for a Daytona...yellow gold.

I have a collection of two watches, but wear my Explorer II exclusively. I am thinking of switching my TT DJ for the DJ style you have in order to have the same "problem" as you, LOL.

I have to agree with the poster who talked about kissing a lot of frogs to find the one he wanted. I also empathize with gj, and recently made the decision to clean house and stick with the top 2 or possibly three. One of the other forums had a thread in which a poster said that he was going to get the collection down to three watches, each with a specific role. One dress, one work, and one beater. Makes sense to me. I think my 16710 will fill the work billet admirably, and my El Primero HW is classy looking enough for dress, although the GMT could do that too. We'll see how it goes when it's time to post the sales.

It's a question most of us ask at some point. I think it has do a lot with our perceived "comfort zones" and the direction we as collectors want our collections to go.

I go through periods where I think I'm over the top on the number of pieces I have and scale back a bit (or perhaps more accurately change directions).

As you know Gerrard there are those collectors who possess mega collections and rarely wear some of the pieces in those collections. That they don't in no way diminishes the collection (or the collector), but rather the pride they feel in owning these watches is reward enough.

To be honest I'm not sure a collection of "grail only" would be the best thing for me. The concern I would have about marring the watch in daily use would detract from the joy of ownership for me. Here is where the "daily wear" watch plays yeoman's service.

I have pieces that are worn rarely or set aside for special occasions. They serve thier own special place in my collection and represent an era that we will never see again.

I do think at some point for most of us a collection can get ahead of you. Comfort zone is the key.

Excellent question, I'm not sure there is an answer, at least not for me. I stopped counting how many watches I've owned once it got past 400 (and that was 2002), I've only got a handful these days, 4 rolexes and a few others. I've always thought it would be great to get rid of everything and just have a super-grail, a paul newman daytona or a simple vintage patek. Wouldn't it be great to just have one watch?

I can't seem to get down to just one, maybe it's just not in the cards for me.
One watch, that fulfills all the needs of watch collector? Maybe, some day.
