Spent the weekend...
... without TRF like the rest of you. But as usual I decided it was time for a little project. My only remaining grandparent just went in for hip surgery. At 86 years old she pulled through a.o.k. She's just arrived at a rehab center and will be there for about three months. About two weeks ago I pruned a huge branch from one of my Rose of Sharon bushes and I got to thinking... Grandma's going to need a walking cane. So I retrieved the branch and got to work. At the thicker end it was about 2 1/2" in diameter and at the thinner end about 1 1/2" in dia. I widdled my butt off let me tell ya'! Here's the "end"... ... result...

RoseOfSharon005.jpg The round spot above and to the left of the dime is part of a dowel I cut and sanded to hide the counter-sunk screw head. RoseOfSharon007.jpg |

That looks quality, love the colour of the wood, hoping your Grandmothers recovery is speedy and as painless as possible.

Thanks guys and gals. Gram's pulled through a lot worse. It's just going to take some time to recoup. I know my other grandparents were always reluctant to use walkers or canes, so I thought maybe if I hand made one she might feel more inclined to use it... even after she's fully recovered.

The proper way is to have the person stand with their arms down by their sides while wearing their everyday footwear. You measure from the base of the palm/wrist to the ground and add 1". A cane should be held with just a slight bend in the elbow. In this case I used my wife as a model. She's approximately the same height. I also tried to keep it slightly longer rather than go too short. If I need to make an adjustment I can always trim a bit off the bottom of the cane.
