New to forum - I've always worn Omegas but am considering a Rolex.

Please help me with a few questions -

I understand the differences btw AD and GM for Omega - are they basically the same for Rolex?

www.essential-watches.com - what are your experiences with them?

Rolex bezels - what are the differences among old/new fluted bezels and engine turned bezels?

Hi and welcome to TRF.

OMEGAs are excellent value for the money you pay out for them. Besides, an OMEGA can be had for fabulous discounts, but make sure you decide to keep the watch. Resale on an OMEGA is a killer unlike Rolex which holds its value much better.

Both are excellent watches - if you can't decide, just have one of each and that should make you very happy!!

A FLUTED bezel on any Rolex DJ or DD is always made of precious metal - NEVER steel.

So you could have a WG fluted bezel or a YG fluted bezel. The older ones too were always either WG or YG.

The engine turned bezel could be had as an option on the SS DJs instead of the smooth polished bezel.

In any case, the engine turned bezel was always made of steel - never a precious metal. This kind of bezel has now been discontinued on all the latest DJs with the new style broader case. These new DJs are now available either with the smooth, polished SS/YG bezel or the WG/YG fluted one.

So, of course I have another question. What year were the engine-turned bezels discontinued?

I ask because I am planning to purchase my "entry" Rolex (SS ladies datejust) from a grey market dealer(likely essential watches), and there are different bezel options. I don't want to buy a watch that's discontinued.

How can I determine what year the watch was made?

With the advent of the new style DJ cases, the engine-turned bezel was fazed out....replaced by the slightly rounded, smooth bezel or the WG fluted bezel.

Is the fluted bezel a little bit wider on the newer (modern) datejusts? Or are they the same width? It seems to me the modern are wider, but I can't be sure.

Actually, you're right. The newer fluted bezels are a wee bit wider on the new style DJs.

Yes, Tony, definitely thicker at the lugs....although case diameter is still the same - 36 mm.

I believe the cases are the same thickness as the old ones Tony. The lugs are thicker giving the appearance of a thicker case.

Thanks guys... so it's only thicker out at the lug ends... doesn't stand up off your wrist any higher...

They did a great thing actually 'cause of the biiig watch craze, they manage to punch the DJ up a notch without actually increasing it's overall dimensions.

Just get a TT Sub. Remove the bezel. Fill in the small pin hole. Then polish up and around the dial. Now you have a 40mm Sub date!

Couldnt agree more.40mm or even 42-44mm would have been awesome !! The max size of 36mm prevents me from ever buying a DJ.Thas a shame ..

Personally, I like the smaller size of my DJ for dressier occasions. I have tried one of my larger watches with a suit, and for ME, its just too large and doesn't work. JMHO...
