AD vs. RSC
Hello: I want to service my wife's TT no date. It is time for a service and she has managed to chip the crystal. My AD says they have in house certified Rolex personnel. It would be "about $700" and take four weeks. My other option, is to send the watch to the Dallas RSC. Please help, any advantage to one over the other? Will the paperwork I get from the RSC be more helpful if I want to sell the watch in the future (that assumes I have upgraded her current watch). Any suggestions, insights and comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks |

Juan,
I just had my 10 years old GMT II serviced by Dallas RSC. It was her first service since purchased and recently, she was gaining about 14 seconds a day... Dallas service center did a "GREAT" job of servicing and replacing a part with a genuine part, they also regulated the watch to an astonishing accuracy..!! You see, I have a small SHORT WAVE radio from my military days that I used to listen to... I tune to 5000 or 10,000 KHZ freq. and sync my watch to the tune of the GMT time through air waves.... and again I will say, TO MY ASTONISHMENT, MY NEWLY SERVICED AND REGULATED GMT II HAS BEEN DEAD AND I MEAN DEAD ON THE SIGNAL FOR TWO WEEKS AND HAS YET TO GAIN EVEN HALF A SECOND...!!!! So, I totally trust their through work, recommend their service and will be sending my Sub to them in a couple of years. hope this will help. |

I would find a local independent watchmaker with a Rolex account. Usually quicker turn around and a lot less $

why not sf?
$700 is a little steep, i must say. since you are in california, why don't you send it to the authorized service center in sf? i believe a complete overhaul is $540, and the crystal is $160 to replace. the turn around time is about 3 - 4 weeks, and you will receive a rolex warranty as well.

RSC for me all the way, I have never had ANY luck with independents... I know there are certainly many excellent ones out there I just have never found one, why take the risk?

My experience with AD's is that their overhaul price paces that of the RSC. If you can establish a relationship with a Rolex service technician at a local AD, and have confidence in his/her skills, might be an advantage especially if regulation needs to be tweaked again after servicing.
