As some of you may or may not know I'm on hunt for my next watch... a Patrizzi or MKII Daytona. But I was thinking, will I ever be satisfied? What I really lust after day in and day out is a pre-16520 Daytona, 6262, 6263, 6265 etc. Now it's conceivable that I could get said pre-16520, but I would have to give up what I currently own (all of them) and tack on the $ I was going to spend on the MKII/Patrizzi to get that 1 vintage Daytona. Then I get to thinking how much would I really wear it on a day to day basis? On special occasions yeah sure... but am I willing to rock a 30k watch day to day? Ehh probably not. Then what's next from there? I know I'll want another - I'd have to wait YEARS to save up that much again... could I handle the wait after already owning 1? I guess what I'm asking is what would you do in this scenario? Go forward with the plan of the MKII/Patrizzi or flip them all for the 1 true grail?

Yazo, why would you not wear it day to day if you were that interested in it if it would still look great and you could get it maintained every 7 years or so.

I would prefer more cool watches than one grail. ALl of mine are Grails of sorts.

It's a vintage piece... so there's no sending it into RSC to get revived... plus I wouldn't want to shave off any of the case, band etc. It would IMHO have to be worn with the utmost care - not the daily beater type. Make sense?

I wouldn't sell my entire collection for one watch. Primarily because I know that no matter how much I loved my grail watch I would still want another.

I would go for it ONLY if you intend to wear it daily. Only you, and a few others, will know that its a $30k watch. You can always save up for a few years after and get a "regular" daytona to be your "beater" watch. If you dont go for it, you will always say "what if". Go for it, enjoy it, and IF you feel that quantity of pieces is more important in your collection, you can always sell the pre-daytona.

Well I am sorry to say it, but if you have to think about it then really you are not in the bracket to be wearing a 30K watch, this is not an intended as an insult, I would hazard a guess that vintage watches like those you have mentioned are collected by guys that have a very large dispossable income. The fact you would be worried to wear the thing negates the logic in flipping all you have and then some to get it, but as we know there aint no logic in being a WIS!!!

It's always nice to drool over the Uber watches but sometimes we have to take a reality check now and then.

Absolutely no way......there are lots and lots of watches I would love...I actually try very hard not to have a grail.....if you have one then you can become quite seriously obsessed.....obsession can lead to bad decision making....nope....I never buy to sell....ever...that's the way it's going to stay.....I will keep trying not to develop a "grail" need.....JMHO

Interesting take. I treat my current MKIII Daytona the same way as described in my 1st post... it's not a daily beater, but rather worn on special occasions. Is it wrong to try to treat my possessions with care and thought? Maybe I'm better off treating my watches like sneakers or socks and not pay them any mind?

I guess I explained myself poorly and you have misunderstood my post.

There is nothing wrong with treating your pocessions with care, as we all work hard to be able to get them.

So in answer to your original post;

No, I don't think you should flip all watches to get the grail.

There are several grails I would love to own, but the due to the sheer cost of them, I would stuggle to justify buying them as I know due to the price it would detract from the pleasure I get from wearing a mechanical watch, as I would constantly be worried about the piece.

This gave me a thought... maybe I can sell the other 2 Rolex's I have the Sub and AK... and find a vintage Daytona for the 20-23k range... which I think I might have found.
