Watch shopping in Chicago?

Some advice....

I'm staying in downtown Chicago for the next few days, Michigan ave right next to the river.

What are the biggest, best watch stores within walking distance?

I want to do some window shopping after work. I just got a Rolex gmtIIc TT, and not sure what I'm getting next. So I want to check out as many luxury brands as I can while in town

Thanks!

C.D. Peacock Jewelers is right on Michigan avenue as well and they have a decent selection of Rolex in addition to Cartier, Patek Philippe, and Panerai. They are really friendly and helpful.

Avoid Tourneau like the plague. Peacock is the place to go in that area.

Howard Frums is close by...It's a cross between a pawn shop / Vintage dealer --- if you are into that.

C.D. Peacocks actually has two stores in the area - problem is, they're not price competitive and they are horrid at service. For instance, if you buy a watch from them you will not get the box or papers until two weeks have passed from the time of the purchase - if they send them at all. (Typically, it takes two or three calls). "Integrity" is not a word with which they would be described.

Swiss Fine Timing (645 North Michigan Avenue) is a great place with a wide selection of fine timepieces. They are stunningly knowledgeable and are honest as the day is long. Pretty good at deals, too.

If you want an adventure in the unique, there is a store on Rush or Chicago or Oak Street (maybe someone out there can help me here) that sells Urwerk and the like - fantastic to look at, but far, far too dear for my wallet.

Tourneau is in the Water Tower Mall. Not bad, but few deals. Howard Frumm is on Wabash - I agree with Bill's characterization, but Howard is a good egg.

Good luck and have fun!

i used to live in the area. didn't much experiences with the ad's, but i remember my parents didn't like the big t, nor cd peacock. i remember my parents bought a few watches from swiss fine timing though. i know it's not very helpful, but based on my parents' experience, i'd go w/ swiss fine timing.

Swiss fine is good...if you are looking to buy I wouldn't even bother going to the other two. Frums is cool because you never know what might be there.

WTF? a shop won't give you the box or papers with a $10k watch? And no price breaks? I never heard of that.

Even the most uptight AD's in Detroit couldn't get away with that!

If you want a good deal, stay away from CDP. I bought mine from local jewelers in the suburbs, MUCH better deals.
