New here, I need help ! 14060 or seiko?

Hello!
I'm a french 27 y/o student, finishing my law studies, and i want to buy a long-lasting watch for next winter, if I become graduated... That's why I came here to request advice. I want to live for travel, adventure, mud, seawater and others, so a diving watch come to mind. I want it to last more than 30 years, because a good watch worn in great moments becomes priceless.

I love well engineered machines, like nikon fm2 or toyota bj.. and after months of internet searching, I think that two watches come to mind:

Rolex submariner 14060m (the last without ceramic bezel) OR Seiko marinemaster 300 sbdx001.. I've got a 6,3" wrist.

The two are very good products:

seiko: + price / japan=perfection / smooth curves / excellent lume
- servicing 30 years beyond? / lack of "finesse", too thick.. / 316l= bad after 30years of diving..

rolex: + beauty / long time servicing? / 904l= no rust
- price / awful lume / "look at me i'm rich" style / no date


HELP ME! I don't manage to make my choice...

If money is no object (I don't know what that SEIKO costs), then the Sub would be my choice in a heartbeat.

It's a watch which will bring you years and years of joy and happiness.

That seiko costs about half the price of the rolex..

Welcome to the Forum Xavier and both watches are very nice. If it was my choice I would prefer the Sub No Date(14060M). That watch has been around for over 50 years with a solid history. The styling is iconic and it will last you forever!!!

It has to be the Sub over the Marinemaster,as this watch has everything,even though there is nothing wrong with the Seiko. I may be wrong but i thought the 14060M Sub was made from 316L SS, nothing wrong in that though, it will last years and has proven longevity.

Since you are buying a watch to last and treasure it will be much easier to treasure a Rolex. It will last you well and is a thing of beauty; form and function.

If its a watch to last you 30 years - I'd go for the rolex. Time-less classic

The seikos a good watch so be sure to try on both & get what you prefer on your wrist rather than buying the name\ whats best for resale, etc.

What you might want to consider also is waiting till you graduate\ get your first job before purchasing. Yeah I know - boring but ....

Il y a des vendeurs sur le site (David SW, Oscar - Bodybump entre autre) qui ont de bonnes affaires.
Je viens d'acheter à Oscar une Sea Dweller et tout c'est très bien passé.

You are commended for thinking ahead of time about to the needs of your very soon to come entry to the labour market as a lawyer. For such needs, and in terms of form and function, Rolex wins hands down. As you indentified correctly, "lack of "finesse, too thick.", are not really endearing features to your day-to-day professional needs. Rolex is bound to give you a much better utility at a much better price given its longevity, serviceability and reliability. Best of luck in you next career move.

If you have the $$, go for the Rolex.

so why don't you get a rolex and then in a few years time you look at it and think what was i thinking off seiko lol

I'd get the Sub in a heart beat. There's just no comparison. Don't get me wrong I actually love Seiko watches, but why buy a lookalike when you could get the real thing.

The decision should be made first in accordance with your money situation. Money matters and Rolex will cost more than most watches.

There are many reasons why a Rolex would be a good choice, and since this is a rolex forum most people here will recomend that you get a Rolex.

Purchase your material things according to your personal choice. You earn your money don't do what the next guy tells you to do.

Oh, by the way did I fail to say that you definitely should get the Rolex?

Go with the Sub. The marinemaster is an icon of the seiko world, but the Sub is THE icon! I wouldn't mind having a marinemaster because I am a fan of Seiko watches, but never in place of my Sub. Good luck with your decision.

The MM is a great watch, but it has some drawbacks: the monoque case prevents just any watchmaker from servicing it (will need to be sent to Japan) and of course since it is a Japan only watch, the warranty won't be good in France.

If money is no object, go for the Sub. They're simply are no drawbacks.

I'm going to buck the trend and recommend the Seiko here. I think it's a very impressive watch for the money - I can guarantee that the bracelet will feel far more refined than the one on the 14060m, and the movement seems pretty impressive as well. It's a properly thought out diver's watch, arguably even more so than the 14060M.


Just to clarify for those who don't know what watch the Seiko is, please check out this link - you might be pleasantly surprised. Don't let brand stigma stop you from appreciating the watch as a piece of engineering

Well ... 22 for ROLEX
1 for SEIKO...

I will see my AD this evening to ask him if the 14060m will still be available in next february.. ( My results will be in january ) Or I will perhaps wait for the next basel show.. if the bracelet is improved.. ( I hope they won't put a ceramic bezel ! )

Both are great watches and I doubt you would be disappointed with either one but based on your wrist size I would go with the sub and not to mention 30 years+ is proven with the sub. Although I am sure the seiko would last just as long, the marine master sbdx001 just hasn't been around that long but many will acknowledge the quality is unbelievable. good luck

Have to agree with Dan the Seiko is a very fine engineered watch and cannot see any reason to see why it would not last as long as the Rolex with the same proper care.The movement is very well engineered like all the Grand Seiko range,and with a bit of regulation I would expect it to perform inside or to the COSC spec.The main and only problem to some would be perhaps brand image and resale value.
