Green gold dial?

In the spec details on the Rolex website, there is mention of "green gold dial" when referencing the new 116610LV.
No other watch in the entire line has that feature.
Anyone know the detail behind this?

There has been much debate on this topic here on the forums. Some claim it is solid Green Gold (probably 18k), some say it is a brass bass with a green gold applied on top. I am not sure if anyone knows for sure yet here on the forum.

Hi guys,

What i have heard is that Rolex have managed to create that special look of their "green gold dial" by coating an aluminium disc with gold using the PVD method.

Green gold is uncommon in the jewelry world until the past few years, but it has been around for a while.

There are plenty of alloys added to the gold mixture to make different colors. I think aluminium oxide is the metal that gives it a green tone. Blue, and purple gold are making their way into the exotic jewelry shows.

It wouldn't be too hard for Rolex to bond green gold to the dial.

Well in the Basel press release it stated that the dial surface is green gold and IMHO thats what its.If it was solid gold and the dial weight it would have to bare a hallmark just like the platinum dials.

That's where I got mine and no one there can come up with a reasonable explanation what "green gold" is.

Not here either!!

My AD has sent a couple of emails to Rolex, Geneva, but no reply yet.

This is becoming a very controversial issue. Why would Rolex use the word "GOLD" (irrespective what colour it is) if it's NOT???

I almost think the markers are made with green gold, as well as the hands. The green gold could be applied in a light layer by electro plating. The gold is just like any other gold, but has 6 karat of aluminium instead of nickel, copper, or any other alloy. You can make it into a liquid, a leaf, a paint, a solid, and apply it to the surface however

The marker and hands appear to be of White Gold, Paul. It's only the dial which has been termed as "Green Gold Dial"........whatever the hell that means.........very ambigious if you ask me!!

Well, I don't doubt that there is green gold involved - coloured gold isn't impossible, far from it. I remember a few years ago, the shop where I work sold a line of purple gold. My feeling is that the entire dial will be gold - it would account for the price difference between the LN and LV

This can not be called gold. Once again, legally for something to be called gold in Canada it must be 9k or higher, in the USA 10k or higher. Therefore, calling the dial green gold as it states on the Rolex webpage would mean if someone was to remove the dial it should be
a) Halmarked
b) Of at lease 9k or 10k or higher

The markers are not green gold, nor are the hands. And electroplating is only around 5 microns of gold and legally can not be referred to as green gold, yellow gold, black gold or any kind of gold.

If Rolex made the mistake of marketing the dial as being green gold they could be in trouble if they are not meeting international gold standards as this is an outright lie.

Green gold can be produced in shades ranging from very light green to a deep forest green.

This is done by varying the quantity of silver, copper and cadmium in the mix. As long as the alloy contains 75% gold, you have 18k gold regardless of the final color or other metals in the alloy.

Whether this Rolex dial is solid green gold or green gold applied to another base metal, remains a mystery as of now.

Actually Rolex uses aluminum as one of the alloys to achieve their Green Gold.

Thats correct a mixture of gold powder and aluminium powder, and the original press release from Basel, did state (dial surface) was green gold whatever that means.

This is the mystery as now it seems they are referring to the dial as being green gold. Maybe it is a solid 18k yellow gold dial with an applied green gold surface?

This is hurting my head trying to figure it out

My gut feeling still tells me that the dial is in fact 18K gold (the colour is not important as, with today's technology, any colour of gold is possible).

Tom, from Switzerland, had his AD confirm that it is in fact 18K gold and not some plated or painted over crap.

He's going to carry out further investigations and get back to us.

JJ

My AD has sent an email to his rep asking this question specifically. When I hear the official Rolex explanation, I will pass it on.
