Another newbie question about buying a rolex
An AD tells me its better to buy the now discontinued 16610 Black face Rolex Submariner than the newer one
He says that true collectors like to buy late model watches at their run ends. Any truth |

Maybe in forty years from now. At this point, the 16610 has little collectible value because rolex must have made a gigillion of them during their very long production run. Pick the one you prefer....

The AD is telling you that because the AD wants to get that watch out of his/her store and make room for the new Sub-c. Either sub is an excellent choice, but IMO the Sub-c is a superior watch - inside and out.

Don't listen to what your AD says... listen to what YOU want. I never give a damn on what my AD says unless it's involving the words "Discount" or "Special price" or "Priced to clear" or "Bonus/extra".

Yeah it's gonna take a very very long time for the 16610 to accumulate much value. The 16610 was probably the best selling watch for many years among the rolex line. Not considering datejusts of course but DJs have so many dial, bezel, bracelet variations. So the sub is pretty much the best selling model standalone meaning there are millions of subs out there circulating. Get what you want if the subs really have that much collectors value as the AD imply then you wouldn't even have the chance to have it offered to you.

My AD told me the same thing when I was buying my Sea-Dweller. I went there to buy a SD anyway so I didn't pay much atttention to their lame sales pitch.

You lost me at "My AD told me" Seriously buy the watch that YOU like, not what your AD tells you to buy. As stated above, the modern Rolex is in no way a collectors item, there are simply too many being produced to be rare.

Unless he is related to you...your AD is a salesperson.

Get what you like and what is within the budget. Hopefully you can get some discount on the discontinued model.

Your AD is confused about collectors..........
Unless you are a collector and are purchasing a watch that you have researched and fits into your focus and direction as a collector; ignore the offhand comments of the salesman.. Get the watch that you want to put on your wrist every day for the next decade or so. Only then will you know if the one you chose has developed any interest amongst collectors.....
