Should I buy my 10 month old son a new ceramic sub and give it to him in 20 years? I am talking about not touching it and 'saving' it for him. If not I will always have my own that I'd be able to pass on.
It would be one of the 1st sub-c's released here in Canada too... Please answer the poll question. I am going to let TRF make this decision for me 100%!!!!!!!!

If you mean your gonna enjoy it, have it serviced and pass it on then I say go for it. But if your gonna just put it in a safe for 20 years then I say no.

I would say no because with today's huge production numbers I don't think any current model will ever be a scarce collectors item, and I don't think the price appreciation will compensate for the lost investment potential of the purchase price over 19 yrs. JMO.

I voted no. It will mean more to him if you give him your watch.

As mentioned, I'd say the watch would have much more meaning to him if it were your watch that carried the memories of him seeing it on you as he grows up.

I've seen countless well-meaning parents give something of high value to young adults and they just sell it to get what they are interested in. That would really hurt your feelings if it happened to you.
So I say buy it for you and journal entries about it. Then leave it to him. even if he doesn't grow up to like watches like you, he'd love the history.

Buy it but.....
wear it and enjoy it and then MAYBE give it to him....A lot can happen in 20 years......Only one of my three boys (The youngest being 20) would wear a watch if I gave them one...The other two wouldn't be interested.....Thank goodness.....

Why not?
You seem to think it's a good idea and that's all that matters.

A virgin birth-year Rolex along with one of his old man's would be fantastic.
One to build memories with, and the other relive his dad's.

Seems to me you're projecting your hobby/interest onto your son: "It would be one of the 1st sub-c's released here in Canada too...". Will this be of any consequence in 20 years time? Will he even wear a watch?
Safer I would have thought to put aside/invest the money in an account for him. |

Go for it! |

I vote no. Better idea: put the purchase price in its own "watch account," invest it, and buy something then with the money. I bet you'll come out ahead. Besides, a 20-year-old Rolex is better than no Rolex at all, but I'd still prefer a new one.

Agreed - I'd also mention that fashions will likely have changed in 20 years' time, a Sub may be too big/small/flashy/demure by then. Who knows, people might go back to pocket watches I think the gesture of putting aside some money and growing it would be nice

I would like to find a 1976 Rolex for my birth year but it is one of those obscure years for whatever reason. I'm keeping my eyes open...I have an itch for an oysterquartz and I thought could find one from '76 someday. Then I found out they first came out in 1977. Then again, the earliest were probably made in 1976... The contrast between each of the quoted replies above is amazing though.

I think it's a GREAT idea, to have a Rolex from the year you were born. Especially when it was bought new and put aside as a special gift.
I also agree with the other poster that said to wait a few months for the hype and prices to come down a bit then get one and put it away. I can't even imagine finding one in BNIB condition twenty years after I was born. It would have cost a fortune and been very hard to find a mint 20 year old Rolex. Cool idea, good luck wiht it and congrats on you son. -Pete

I suppose if he has no interest in watches whatsoever, or Rolex becomes less relevant, you might enjoy the watch...
