Adjusting the Minute and Second Hands

How do you adjust the Minute and Second Hands so that when the Seconds Hand strikes the 12'O Clock position the Minute Hand would be exactly on top of the minute marker?

I try to line the hands up, but when I push in the crown the Minute Hand moves ever so slightly. I try to set the Minute Hand slightly off to compensate when I push in the crown. It seems there is always some slack in the Minute Hand. As soon as I push in the crown, the Minutes Hand does not want to move along with the Second Hand immediately.

I picked up my Explorer 2 from RSC NY for warranty service a couple weeks ago. I don't know how they did it. The Minute and Second Hands move exactly as they should.

I stop my second hand at 12:00 and move the minute hand to the next five minute marker, moving it onto the outer half of the marker. This seems enough to match them up as the second hand moves before the minute hand starts. What you are noticing is normal. There is a small amount of play in the gearing of the minute hand.

It is normal what you are describing,and is just referred to as gear slack......

I hack the second hand at 12,then adjust the minute to the correct marker.When you let go of the crown you may see it drops back a little. From there I'll turn my crown backwards a little until it engages the minute hand again and realign with the minute I'm after....Takes a little getting use to but easily achieved if your not in a hurry...For me most of the time,close is good enough!

Welcome to TRF!

Here's how I do it...............read carefully to understand the whole procedure!!

The best way to do it is on the hour, e.g. 8 o'clock, 9 o'clock, etc.

You would need some kind of time checking method, preferably an AM radio which gives off 6 beeps on the hour every hour.

Now make sure you are very close to the stipulated time and set your watch for say 8 or whatever time it is.............so that the long minute hand aligns exactly up with the triangle at 12.

STOP your second hand on '11' and as soon as you hear the first beep on the radio, push the crown home. The 6th beep should sound when the second hand touches the '12' mark on your watch.................and you will see how perfectly the minute and second hand line up at the time.

Download application on your iphone called Emerald Time which is the correct time from where u are.
I used it and checked time with the talking clock number here in Australia and both are in sync. I sync my Daytona with the application and my Daytona hasnt missed a second in weeks! Also it depends on your activity while wearing the watch.

Even if you get it perfectly aligned, won't the minute and second hands get out of sync over the course of the month?

If you want to make the minute hand points EXACTLY on the given minute when the seconds hand has reached "12" (or "60" seconds), then you must know that there is some "play" in the hands. So if you just set the minute hand EXACTLY 11 AM so that the minute hand will point exactly on the 12 then you will notice that by "one minute past 11 AM" the minute hand will NOT (or probably not) point EXACTLY and spot on on the minute but rather somewhat like 10-12 seconds PAST, due to the "play" into the gears.

Solution: Turn the minute hand approximately TEN minutes PAST "11 AM" and then turn the minute hand BACK again to the EXACT time (hour hand point at "11" and minute and seconds hand pointing - exactly - on "12"). Then - EVER SO GENTLY - turn the winding crown clockwise so that the minute hand actually points a bit (like "10-12 seconds" PAST the full minute marker). That way you adjusted for the "play" of the minute hand gear, and the minute hand will point EXACTLY on the minute next time the seconds hand reaches "twelve".

I have read that the minute and second hands are not linked and do get out of sync eventually.

I have noticed this on my quartz watches, as well.

I was glad to read that it is normal for this to happen.
