If you want to buy a Rolex ? educate yourself

I am surprised that new Rolex watch collectors do not want to invest
in books about Rolex Sport watches.
Some are willing to spend 10.000 on a vintage sport Rolex
and have no clue what to look for in order to make an educated decision

I have been learning & trading with Rolex watches for over 40 years...
I have one of the largest Rolex watch collections in the planet
and yet....I know one thing...That I know nothing about Rolex.!! <------ (well Almost)
So I educate myself "perpetually"

I am not kidding, I have more than 10.000 dollars worth of Rolex books.

So my suggestion to all of you new into the Rolex watch buying/collecting
is to educate yourselfs by buying some trully magnificent books about Rolex

Thats all, have a nice day...

Totally agree.

When I first got an urge to buy a luxury watch, I have spent hours on the Internet to look for more information, reviews and pix. That gave me enough idea of what I need and then I wad able to ask question in depth at various forums. That wad about 2.5 years ago.

Thesedays you get people online asking question when a simple google search will get you the answer...

I'm all for invest some tome into what you like.

Education/knowledge is king (IMO)

2.5 years on and I still learn new things about the watches almost everyday.

Anastasios... I saw what you had... I though it would be gone in an hour or so... I was actually surprised it did not sell that fast...

Tempoking, i think you hit the nail right on the head. I have encounter countless people that wears Rolex and had no idea what they are wearing. And yet, when these people want to buy a flat screen tv or computer, which is fraction of cost of Rolex... they research all they can before making a decision!? Just doesn't make any sense to me.

Hello Anastasios!!
You made a good point with your statement.

I do not consider myself a serious watch collector nor very knowledgeable in this area, but I have been what could be considered a serious antique guns and knives collector, for more than 35 years, and I find it happens the same in this collecting department.

Very few dare to invest in a serious comprehensive library regarding the subject of their collections, much more invest time in reading about.

When requested to give a counsell to a newcomer to the collecting field, I had always said that first step was to read, to read and to read, and to collect (and read) a good bunch of books before making the first "iron" purchase.

Reading gives knowledge, and also saves many headackes, when dealing with antiques or vintage, or with new items as well.

I completely agree with you, and I appreciate your phrase, regarding that, even after more than 40 years in the collecting fraternity, one never knows everything needed to be known about a subject.
(Of course I suspect that you know "a little" about Rolex, though your modesty will not recognize!!)
We are continuously learning and discovering, and reading helps a lot in this learning.

There is no single book, that has not given me some kind of knowledge, sometimes small hint, sometimes big information, but every books teaches something!

Nice to read your comments in this regard, and to completely agree with you.
I send you my best cordial regards,
Abel.

Good point. I've got myself a couple of Mondani books about the Submariner wich costed me as much as a good Sinn watch but I have to say that they're beutifully written and illustrated, they really get the Rolex spirit out of you.

The truth is that it's more about history than tech stuff when you talk about Rolex.
Like it or not,I like my 3135 to be a very ignorant, unrefined, ugly, nothing to be fancy about caliber shoved in a very ignorant, virtually impenetrable, beautifully classic fashion flexbile watch ready to take a beating and keep on licking. Sorry,I'm done with the Rolex info/collecting thing and I'm just using my SD as a cool tool now !!!

You can start with "the best of times-Rolex wristwatches"
by James Dowling and Jeff Hess, that will give you an idea
how Rolex got into the "Oyster" business..

Then you can specialize with books about the Rolex models
you fancy ie. GMT, Daytona, Submariner, Explorer etc.

I agree I too have an extensive Rolex book collection and I been collecting since the late 70's and I'm still amazed at the new things I learn about Rolex watches that I didn't know before.
