Got to feel bad for this guy

I was in a local AD today looking around and chatting and a customer came in to pick up his Daytona from being serviced. They unfortuantely had to tell him his watch was fake. This guy was very close to totally losing it. Felt bad for him.

One thing is repeatedly striking my mind that if the watch was fake, how could the AD accepted it for servicing as any AD infact any person dealing with authentic Daytonas can easily spot fakes from the authentic one without opening their case backs

They say people who can afford Rolexes can afford to get ripped off, and that if they're stupid enough to get ripped off they deserve it.

That's horrible! I've heard that there are some fakes out there that are so good they fool ADs till they pull the caseback off.

A good friend of mine has been in the pawn business for many years now. He's seen a million fakes and can usually spot them a mile away. He says there are some Rolex hooks out now that are so good he can't tell that they're bad until he pops the back. Especially Daytonas and 16610's.

I still can't believe this. I agree that for 16610 and simple rolexes this could be true but for 2000 n higher Daytona (4130 caliber) its impossible. The subdial position of new daytona especially the horizontal one - the ones at 3 n 9 have their axis different from the axis of main min, hr n stopwatch second hand which is next to impossible to achieve in any Replica movement.
Also the click of stop watch starting pusher of a genuine Rolex Daytona could not be matched in any replica movement.
I think this AD was pretty much fool enough and didn't do any research on Rolex.

I can tell you this, the Atlantic City hock shop owners get pretty good at IDing fakes. Probably a hell of alot better than most AD's. So, there must be some good hooks of Daytonas going around for these guys to have to open them.

The Daytona is one of the most sought after Rolex's. It would make sense for these creeps who are making the fakes to focus time and attention into making good ones

I'd really like to know where the guy who got duped bought that watch from. He must have thought he was getting a real one if he brought it in for service.

I hope that person who pick up the daytona does not paid anything to the AD or cheated from the eBay or anything. But, s/he just to send the watch to the AD for verify of authenticity and given the reason of servicing.

Will that be sound better?

Simple rule of thumb, if I am to paid more than USD12,000 for a watch. I do not mind paying a little more to RSC to get the watch verified.

I have been hearing that the fakes keep getting better. Just like diamonds, its hard to tell. One of my best friends is a diamond broker from Israel and he said its hard to tell the fakes diamonds, they have testers now, like some kind of electric tester. I`m over my head here on this subject.

Regards,
Lane

I have seen what you guys are saying on ebay. Flat out fakes with perpetual calender Daytonas ending in the $5-6,000 range. Unbelievable!

Absolutely true. Our very own Padi, a virtual expert in the field, nearly got fooled into believing a TT Blue Sub to be the real thing. Everything about the watch was pin perfect....except for ONE thing.

The serial no. was inscribed on the '12' side instead of the '6' side. That's when he took the watch to his watchmaker and had him open up the caseback only to find an ETA movement inside.

The rest of the fake looked unbelievable real!!

GO to an AD. Pay the freight. You won't have to worry about this stuff. It seems pretty easy and simple to me.

I had a guy trying to sell me a "Fake" Daytona in KL, Malaysia. Was trying to pass it off as real, even had a fake copy of a warranty card. Overall the fake looked pretty good, of course what immediately gave it off, was the Sea Dweller engraved caseback!!

I really feel for this guy. Hope he can find who sold it to him and get justice!

People will do that all the time, think they are getting a really good deal and then later find out it was a fake. Happened to a friend of mine buying fake gems and rubies here in Thailand. I warned him!

All I was able to pick up was that it was somewhere on the net, think it might have been ebay, not positive. The person who originally took the watch in was relatively new and they said the quality of the fake was very very high quality. The dealer felt horrible for him and kind of used to him to prove a point that its foolish to not buy from an AD and if you do buy it on the net its either fake or used. I cant express how bad they felt for the guy.

I think it's a bit harsh that ebay is getting such a beating. The whole ebay system has bought the world closer together, and given us all a wider selection of sellers.

I think it's great. BUT, it is not up to them, and impossible for them to monitor and vet each and every item available for sale.

Now others have complained that sellers must register for PayPal (which is owned by ebay), and see it as extra money grabbing. But it should be used as a "holding bay" or trust account for a set period in case things go wrong.

But no matter how many checks and balances are in place the crooks out there will always find a way to operate.

I really feel for this guy, wherever he bought the watch from. I don't expect everyone who owns a Rolex to be a WIS or knowledgable to tell the fakes. How many of you get diamonds checked when buying from the big retailers.

Many have been caught out by "upgrading" diamond colour and/or clarity.

Without ebay, I would not have the watches I have, BUT I try to be very careful, and as yet no problems.

In closing, just another quick note: One of the worlds largest watch auction houses, who specialise in high end watches has a pretty questionable Comex up for auction, and have in the past been taken on a few other unique watches, so we are not foolproof.

Be careful, ask lots of questions, and if in doubt.........RUN!

As lot of members new to this forum--myself included--ask about grey market vs AD, etc, this story would serve as a reminder why the safest policy is:

1. research the purchase thoroughly, and get the best possible price for the watch at an AD. Offer cash, negotiate with several ADs, but get your lowest price through an AD, or;

2. buy from a friend or known entity with an AD or jeweller authenitcating the watch before purchase.

Just my 2 cents

I bought my datejust from a gentlemen than owns a real estate business that has been in town 23 years. We met at the Rolex dealer, verified the watch, the gentlemen provided me a bill of sale, along with a copy of his original valid drivers lisence, the original box, papers, hologram, seal, invoice from original purchase along with copies of the original and cancelled cashieers check and a personal check for the downpayment on the original. Seerials were verified, and I am a happy camper. I am too scared to buy on ebay.

I purchased a 3 year old datejust for 3200 which I felt was fair. The AD said the watch he rated in excellent as new condition. Today is friday, I have had it a week and yet to take it off. This is how I purchased mine.

My good friend, a Laguna Beach jeweler, now living in Thailand, says that the new Rolex fakes are so good he cannot tell. He has been a Rolex dealer for more than 30 years.
He also mentioned he has a bucket full of Rolex, Panerai etc that are repros that he wears in Thailand. Asked me what I wanted and he would be glad to send it.
Might not be a good idea for a white boy to be wearing a $12,000 timepiece while tooling around Bangkok!
