A quiet evening

I thought I would tell something about a typical Friday evening in our home. Friday means the end of a hard week’s work and the start of the weekend. I work as an IT Coordinator for the largest independent oil storage company in the world and this can be very demanding. This also means that I’m on stand-by duty on regular basis. During that time I have to be available for 24 hours a day. Can be stressful.

On that first evening of the weekend I relax and enjoy the good life. That means a nice Late Bottled Vintage Port and snacks. My snacks are fine cheeses and sausages like hand made salami. I usually start the evening with a Trappist beer, this time it was a Westmalle Double. I seldom watch TV and rather listen to music or play the odd DVD. My wife doesn’t drink alcohol at all and isn’t very partial to all those cheeses as well. But she likes the sausages and the other snacks I like to prepare. My brother is the Chef in a one Michelin star restaurant and has taught me a lot about enjoying good food. He lives in Brugge, Belgium and going there is always a feast. We took our daughter out to restaurants as soon as she could walk and we want to show and learn her that good food and good company can be very enjoyable. I know this all sounds very pretentious but I assure you this isn’t the case. My parents always had a very hard life and I vowed to myself I would do anything to get away from this. I succeeded by studying in the evenings and making the extra effort. But this doesn’t show on the outside of course.

And somehow this brings me to Rolex. To me, Rolex is the symbol of making the extra effort. That vow to escape the hard life of one’s parents.

So, what is a typical quiet evening at your home?

Frans.

Great story, Frans.

Right now, it's 6:00 PM on Friday night and I'm getting ready to close down and head home. Friday nights we almost never go out. While we are not religious, Arleen likes to observe Shabbat by staying home. She starts by making dinner, we will often have some wine, usually a nice white, since we often have fish or chicken or turkey. Then after dinner she will light the Shabbat candles. After that we will read, perhaps watch some TV ("What Not To Wear" is one of our favorites) or I'll get on the computer for awhile.

We are on the go and out so much during the week and on weekends, between classes, opera subscriptions, concert subscriptions, theaters (we subscribe to three theater series) and going out to dinner with friends, that staying home on Friday nights is our way of decompressing and gathering our strength back.

See you all later. I'll check in later tonight or sometime over the weekend. Have a good one, all.

I just logged on, JJ. We had a nice dinner at home with our best friends. After they left and we finished cleaning, I thought I'd see what went on while I was having dinner.

Say hi to Zemina for me.

This Friday we had Dylans school halloween party, it was alot of fun. Normally Andie and I have our "date" night Fridays. Dylan goes with her parents for a few hours and we have a quiet dinner together. Although we really are more homebodies than anything else.
