The white dial Explorer II gets competition ...

Had a look at some alternatives. Here's a list with the pricing after discount :

Explorer II,white dial,AD and BNIB @ $4250
Omega Speedmaster Prof "Moon Watch" 3570.50.00 @ $2550
Tag Heuer Carrera,black dial,steel bracelet @ $2200

Any thoughts on these ??

(Had a look at the Planet ocean in 45.5mm,but the size is rediculous. Not considered anymore as a choice)

Tough choices. But, I think I'd have to go with the speedy

I don't have any experience with the tag so I can't comment, but the Speedmaster is a great watch. Strong with a tough as nails movement, it's a bit larger than the EXP II, but I find it sits very well on the wrist.
The bracelet is very comfortable though the clasp is a scratch magnet. Mine is an older version with the 861 movement that is accurate to about +1 sec a day.
The Speedmaster doesn't have the water proof rating of the Rolex if that's an issue, but the historical significance can't be overlooked.

As to the White EXP II, well what can you say??
It's just a beautifull watch with all things Rolex!

I have a Speedmaster Day-Date, which is a fine watch, looked at the Speedy Pro but I really need the date function for work.

I had a Tag chronogrpah, but I have found the general finish on the Rolex to be superior--my opinion only--although you could never go wrong with any of theose choices.

In the end, I would get the Exp II. Why? Since acquiring my first, then second Rolex, I wear Rolex to the exclusion of any of my other watches (anyone want to buy an Omega/Fortis?Seiko?).

The Rolex has a fit and finish that many other fine mechanicals don't. The history and track record of the Speedy is undeniable, but for me, the Exp II has the better water resistance, the date and second time zone function, and a rugged and proven track record of exploration of its own that is second to none.

In terms of pure aesthetics, the Exp II is the best looking watch of the three you mention in my opinion. On the ss bracelet, that white face is almost luminescent. It could work on a whitewater rafting trip or be worn to the office with a suit.

Any of the three will be a great addition to your collection. If you don't go the Rolex, I'd put the Speedy definately as the second. Great wearing, great looking watch, solidly built and looks the business, with a great hsitory.

Best of luck in your choice.

Chris

If money is really no object, Chris....take my advice. Stick with your original plan - get the Exp-II. Then you'll have a nice trio of Black, Blue and White!!

I have had the Omega and I have the Tag. They are both great watches. But, I would take another Rolex over either anyday. Just because I almost always look over my other watches and go for a Rolex when picking something to wear.

Remember the Rolex will have better resell value as well. I you don;t like it and sell it within a few months will probably loose 20-25% if sell it in a couple of years, will probably not loose much. The Omega and Tag will deappreciate 50% or more once out the door, and harder to resell.

Chris, the white dial Explorer II is a great watch indeed. Very classy and has a great history.
I very nearly bought one from my AD last year. Unfortunately I had other commitments, so it had to go on the back burner.

Omega are solid watches as well. I have the black face Omega Seamaster myself.

Though it must be said that a few years after I've gotten the Seamaster, I could not get over the white face Explorer II. Cut a long story short, I got the Explorer II a month or so ago.

Darn, what was my point again?

Chad, good point,on "the worth of used on Rolex".I dont mind spending money, but have a big problem with losing money. All of us have.I can tell you, in my country Omega and Tag used will be worth nothing and thats an understatement.Whereas, considering my huge AD discount on BNIB on Rolex vs what it sells for used in the bigger centra,is a loss of very little.Case in point, used A serial Expl II sells for $3715 vs BNIB very late D serial(D9xxx,thats early 2006) for $4250.

I dont buy what I dont intend to keep.I am not a trader/flipper.Only one mistake with Rolex, that was to trade my GMT II.Should have kept it.

I have three Speedies, as well as a White dial Ex II. Although I love my Speedies, I don't believe they are as durable or versatile as the Ex II.

For one thing, they are like cats around water. Second, the plastic crystal scratches easily. Third, it's possible to break the thingies inside if you press too hard on the pushers (like my 10 year old son did). Finally, they depreciate quickly. I would not pay retail for a Speedy, although I can and have happily paid half that for a slightly used modern Speedy.
