Clearest dial....

I know this has probably been discused before, but can other members, opinions please, tell me what they consider the clearest dial combination that Rolex make, that you can tell the time as soon as you look at it. My father in law who recently passed away had a DJ II with a champagne/diamond dial and he was always saying he has to look at his watch twice to tell the time. I think that was because the hands were gold that matched the dial colour. IMO the white dials, like the white Explorer II with black hands come pretty close to being the best.

IMHO the no-date Sub has the cleanest, clearest and most legible dial. Gold hands over champagne dial is indeed not a combo for easy legibility. BTW, I have the same legibility issues with chrono dials that has contrasting sub-dials. So e.g. black dial with white chrono sub-dials.

The 16610LV with the Maxi Dial or the new 116610LN with the Maxi Dial. I also find my 16600 Sea Dweller very easy to read (especially due to the lack of a cyclops).

I had seen a Black Onyx dial on a TT DJ a few years ago. Probably aftermarket but it was sharp. Crown at 12, date of course and the text (rolex, Datejust.. ) and that was all.nothing around the #s.
I wanted it but the jeweler had sold it before I could get back there..

I agree that a champagne dial DJ is not easy to read. It has always puzzled me why this seems to be by far the most common dial color on DJs.

On a related note, I like the look of the Air King with blue dial and orange arabic markers, but find it very hard to see the time. Same for the black dial Daytona.

On the other hand, I find the black dial Sub and SD easy to read, especially the SD (on the Sub, for me the cyclops interferes with the visibility of the minute hand when it's around 15 after).

I think the white dials are the easiest to read. The gold hands on the white dial of my Explorer works the best of my watches, followed by the Turn-O-Graph. I bet the white dial with gold Turn-O-Graph would be very easy to read.

It would be nice if they made the Explorer in a white dial, similar to the Explorer II, but with the traditional 3-6-9 Explorer face with perhaps black indexes filled with luminova. There is a curent Air-King dial done this way, except it is only the indexes that are lume filled, the 3-6-9 look like solid black.

I also just updated the dial on my OP Date to the modern variant and it is just stunning at night when the lume is glowing, while still retaining some of the classic look like the one Kyle posted above.

Don't have one or pix handy, but I think the SS DJII w/ black dial stick markers would probably be the cleanest and easiest one to read dial.....

Agree with Explorer 2 White Dial. After 23years of GMT's/SUB changed to Exp because it was simpler and easier to read.
Black faced Milguass is (imho) a close second with it's relatively simple and clean dial. An under rated Rolex too !

The watches with black dials are by far the easiest to read IMHO.

White milgauss. Then black explorer.

If you really want a quick read watch go with a panerai. Big and simple.

You are right. My Timex Expedition - similar to the one in your picture but with a black dial - is the most legible watch I have, day and night.

Still I prefer Rolex overall . . .
