Cartier Service Center v. Panerai Service Center
So, these companies are owned by the same people. I hear horrible stories about how long Panerai keeps watches and how unwilling they are to replace. I've never had to deal with them, but I will in a year or so as I have a G series that has never been serviced and it does have an annoying piece of dust on the dial that is starting to gnaw at me. But anyway, back to my point.
I recently sent away my fiancee's Cartier Tank Francaise auto to Dallas for a service as it was of unknown age (I bought it used) and it was gaining about 30secs a day. They had it for only two weeks and gave it the full overhaul for $445. Deal. The watch worked and looked great for about a month and then it started gaining time badly and the rotor was making horrible sounds. I called them and they sounded genuinely applaud and embarrassed. They asked me to send it to them and they said they would bump it to the top of the list. Well, I mailed it on Monday last week and they called me on Sunday of the same week to say it was ready! I asked what was wrong and they admitted that something was not right, but rather than risk fixing it again, they just gave me an entire brand new movement and are shipping it back quickly. So, Cartier sells many more watches than Panerai worldwide and they are equivalent cost watches in many (not all) cases. I hope Cartier can influence Panerai in their service department. Cartier is top notch there for sure.

If your Panerai is out of warranty, I'd send it to Hugues at Chatel & Co.
www.chatelco.com in Carmel, CA He's great.

Coincidentally, I've just had both my Cartier Santos 100 and PAM 183 in for service a few weeks ago. I bought them both 2nd hand so wanted to check everything was ok...
My experience of both was about the same: - Panerai did the check up within 10 days, no charge - Cartier called after about 7 days saying it needed a service and once I gave the go-ahead it was about 14 days all together and $US 280 for the service. I was pretty happy with both but maybe it varies by region. Hong Kong is a big market for watches but geographically small area so maybe that helps with the turn around... |

I don't have experience with Panerai service yet but i can speak very highly of Cartier service, especially at the NYC boutique.
My Pasha has been serviced there twice, both times out of warranty, and both times at no charge. I brought my wifes 2nd hand Santos to Tourneau and they quoted me $60o so I brought to to Cartier to get a quote. next thing I know, its ready to be picked up at no charge also. I'm not saying they service everything for free but I've been fortunate enough. PS-My wedding band is Cartier and every time I need a polish a re-dip, they do it while I wait. If you are in NYC, I highly suggest getting your atches serviced there. |

I had a PAM 202 in service for 10 months and my 289 has been in service 4 months. I had to send back my 127 2 times to get it fixed.

I don't have any experience with Panerai service, but Cartier makes a helluva watch and their service is first-rate. Their timepieces don't get the respect they truly deserve IMHO.

Maybe Cartier includes some of their costs inthe price of the watch.
The steel Roadster chrono is now $8500 and it's still an ETA movt.....just saying. |

It's always good to hear good service stories.
