Rollies in Shanghai

Hey All,

Just got back from a business trip to Shanghai, and was pleasantly surprised by the watch stores on Nanjing Rd. and especially on Huaihai Road. The biggest one I found carried just about everything, from Rolex (naturally) Omega, Breitling, Vacheron, and many more super high-end brands that I'm not really familiar with. One the flight from Barcelona to Frankfurt, I spotted an Explorer 1 on a tall woman seated behind me, a Sub date on a guy sitting one row up from me, and in business class there was a German dude with a white faced SS Daytona. I rocked my GMT ll. Then, from Frankfurt to Shanghai, I spotted a vintage Explorer with the large orange 24 hour hand on an ancient Chinese guy. Lots of fake Datejusts on that flight it seemed, but thanks in part to this forum, I was able to spot them with ease. My buddy, Eden, flew up from Shengzhen (south China) to have dinner with me and some friends, and I got to try out his TT Bluefaced Sub. JJ was right, the dial is absolutely gorgeous on that model, though the gold does nothing for me.

I am now considering a Sub bracelet, or perhaps modifying my GMT one, because the half link does make a difference in the fit of the watch. I don't think I could ever get rid of my GMT for a Sub (though I really think the TripLock crown is magnificent compared to the smaller TwinLock), and let me tell you, every time I click through the hours changing time zones fills me with great pleasure. New-Style GMT ll? Like the ceramic bezel, and oversized hands, but the larger markers and supercase leave me cold. The squareness of the new watch says Tudor to me more than Rolex. Overall, great trip, but the prices were initially higher than the Euro stores, so I don't know what to say about that. Eden tells me that some of the Hong Kong dealers are the best to deal with, and after hearing about his TT Sub, I'm inclined to believe him. Anyway, keep on rocking. Special shout out to Nick for his informative posts and watch de-constructions. Really got a kick out of the bracelet chopping.

Watch prices in shanghai are overpriced, but the RSC is dirt cheap.
I sent a TT DJ in for service, cost me about 150 USD and was ready in 2 week.

I have some investment properties in Shanghai, so I go there about twice a year.

Good post, Liam. Thanks for sharing. You got that right about being able to click through the time zone changes with the GMT. I love that feature on mine.
