I love the super case, because it goes well with my build. I'm a bigger guy, and the super case wears "bigger" than the standard case of previous SS Sport models. Both look great in my opinion, it just depends on who wears it...

I think Rolex is moving in the right direction. Last time I checked ........ people are evolving into larger beings (blame it on the food injected hormones?). So the current 40mm is rather small. Heck women are wearing 40mm these days, so what's left for the men?? A larger timepiece to fit a larger man.

super-case is the new "old-case"
imo - not many people will be able to tell a 16610 and a 116610 apart in the wild, especially when they are worn on someone's wrists |

I'm in total agreement with Jake and Chris Russell on this one. And I will add that seeing both together , on the wrist the old one looks tired and dare I say effeminate compared to the new one(especially the tiny crown guards). But design is very subjective so there is no right or wrong. BUT it is the new classic, and with the pace of change at rolex it is here for likely a long time.
BTW did I say that I LOVE mine? |

Reminds of a Panerai
"cushion" case.
I think Rolex has responded to the decade long increase in watch sizes without having to spend as much money making all of their sport watches (except DSSD and YMII) 42 mm. I prefer the old case with the same size bracelet but love all the other improvements. I've been in several large AD's (Tourneau and Mayor's) and after discussing watches more in depth than the average buyer, they all prefer the older case and some stores didn't have any old Subs in their cases. |

I prefer the old case. The new ones look clumsy and gauche.

I personally think the new sub should have a 22mm band. The current 20mm looks a bit out of proportion.
With that said, I prefer the old case but like the new bracelet and clasp. |

Oy vey... I talked about this with several collectors/friends and there's no right answer. At the end of the day, its just an evolution Rolex had to undertake with their design and everyone's a critic. The real innovation (if there is an obvious one) is the new band that comes with the newer Rolexes. The old bands were always good for heated debate but I for one, never minded the old school flip locks. Good thing there's something for everyone in their lineup.

I'm starting to think I've been too quick to dismiss the supercase as just trend-following on the part of Rolex.
No doubt the classic sub/oyster has a beautiful shape. It's one of the most common designs used for "design-inspired" watches throughout the industry. Yet now Rolex has created another beautiful shape, that is clearly different from the old, and, as far as I can tell, doesn't appear to be "design-inspired" from some other watch. All this, and it still looks good! It's something the watch industry has been lacking: an original(-ish) design that isn't ugly! You see, Rolex did the opposite of trend following. While the rest of the industry simply takes old designs and makes them bigger, Rolex has made it look and feel bigger while still maintaining the "outdated, feminine" size of 40mm! And they've done this while still having a beautiful shape. But it's not just the old sub shape but now super. The new sub really has a look of it's own. The lugs don't integrate with the bracelet, now my eye is forced to notice and acknowledge the lugs for what they are. Same with the crown guards, they're no longer just a fluid connection between the crown and the case. Now they're a prominent part of the watch, and they demand to be recognized! And Rolex has shown the entire watch industry that you really can do something new and different and still beautiful. They've created a shape I've never seen before, they've made it beautiful, and they've even done it without losing the functional and recognizable aesthetics of the sub. But it's not just the old sub with thicker lugs, it's a new look. And until I couldn't appreciate until I realized that. And now I want a SubC. Or maybe I don't... or I do...? Oh I almost forgot ... I believe it is an apdation to the trend now of bigger watches. I am not a fan personally just because of the proportion of the case to the bracelet, and the fact that I have smaller wrists.

I don't know if this was a reason for going with the super case, but think about nearly any well-used professional Rolex that is 40+ years old - the lugs and crown guards can become super overpolished.
These new watches could likely last 100+ years due to the great advances in technology. These new huge lugs and crown guards would permit quite a bit of polishing over the decades and at some point may even look like an older case... |

"The Supercase is also attached to a revolutionary new glidelock bracelet that allows the wearer to micro-adjust the bracelet without even taking if off."
Above a quote by Jake in an earlier post. All good points in his post but the sub is not the only watch being supersized. The GMTIIC did not get the new glidelock clasp. I wish it had.

metal could be removed from the inside faces of the lugs thus allowing a wider band to be fitted. perhaps one for the future from rolex.
