Hmm, tough question and the answers to that are as varied as there are reasons for collecting in the first place. Like many of ya'll it's somewhat of an addiction for me, but then again that could be said for any type of collecting I reckon.
Once a collection reaches a certain point it becomes impossible to give wrist time to many of the pieces within a collection. Currently I've primarily been concentrating my efforts on collecting timepieces from various brands who's styles appeal to me either for their aesthetic reasons or uniqueness. Unfortunately the list of watches that appeal to me is longer than my financial ability to afford them is. I've not even delved into any Vintage timepieces as of yet, but would possibly like to take my collection in that direction at some point. Currently my collection stands at 12 and consists of the following: Breitling Colt SQ II Chronomat GT Chronomat Vitesse SuperOcean Pro SuperOcean Coral Dial LE Montbrillant Legende Others Corum Admiral's Cup Black Hull JLC Master Compressor Memovox Alarm Omega SeaMaster Pro Chronograph Rolex DateJust Rolex Explorer II Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver Wish List Just to name a few AP Royal Oak Offshore AP Jules Audemars Selfwinding Perrelet DLC Turbine Orange/Black Perrelet Skeleton Chronograph Graham ChronoFighter Trigger Rattrapante Graham Oversize Diver Deep Black Graham Mercedes GP Silverstone Panerai PAM312 Panerai PAM64 Glashutte Original Sport Evolution Panorama Breitling B01 LE Chronomat Breitling BEB B01 Chronomat JLC Navy Seals Diver w/alarm JLC Master Compressor Diving GMT JLC Master Compressor Extreme Lab JLC Master Calendar Rolex DSSD Rolex Yachtsman Ulysse Nardin Executive Dual Time Zenith Classic Defy El Primero White Dial Zenith Chronomaster Open Concept XXT So as you can see I think I've pretty much lost my mind with regard to this subject, but I just can't help myself |

For me 3 is the magic number. I have two now so one more to go - which will be a chronograph.

I'm down to these 8 (one, a Concord Saratoga is out for repair and the two Mickey Mouse watches are never worn). I sold about 12 this year including a Concord, 2Omegas, 3 Seikos, Movado, Citizen etc., and replaced them with the GMT IIC and the 16610. There are "only" 2 more that I would like to get- an Omega Speedy Pro and an AP RO 15300. I will get them if I have a windfall, such as the lottery.

I voted one. If I can ever find the one that satisfies me completely, all the rest will be sold.

I used to wonder myself...
I have 4 and wont be buying any more for a while if ever.... Ofcourse there are many Rolex watches which I would like to have but being a realistic man, I can be satisfied with my lineup as it is.. I carefully picked exactly which models and dial assortments I would like and bought them with precision planning both in terms of finances and discount deliberations at both the AD and grey markets... I wanted a certain variety in my collection. I buy only new watches....and dont have interest in older models... My Rolex collection: white dial DJ II - my dress watch Sub LV - my classic sport model TT GMT IIc - the gold in my collection Black SS Daytona - my grail watch While I really have enjoyed the research and planning involved with my purchases, Im glad that im done and can just enjoy the watches that I have... |

For me 4-6 is the number. Any more and I start loosing intereset in the ones I rarely get to use. So I´m pretty steady around that, and instead flip a watch for a "more sought after" when I get the "itch"...

I think 2 is good enough. Just for the pleasure of having something else to wear from time to time.

Voted 4-6. All the Professional models (minus the Exporer, probably), plus a Datejust thrown in for good measure. Rolex wristwatches are worse than crack.

3 or 4 is more than enough
There a a lot of brands out there and when you can afford 10 or more, there are much more interesting brands you can get |

Have yet to determine what that number is. No one needs even one, however it sure is nice to be able to have a couple of options.

I just ran into this old post. It took me one month exactly, I believe (I'll have to check the papers), to acquire a new DJ and I'm still donating money to the worthy causes. Now, I guess if I get a 14060M before the price reaches 10k, I'll be done. I still have one more significant donation to make to a particular organization, though and this one I won't postpone for a watch.
