Twin lock crown reliability....

Hello, i´m thinking about the purchase of a Datejust soon and i was wondering about twin lock crown reliability.When i go to a hotel or so i use to carry just one watch but i do never left it in the room so i wear it all the time including in the spa, beach or anything. i use to wear a Sub and i feel the trip lock to be perfect, will a twin lock crown Rolex stand the same?? I know many will think it´s wrong to take such watches to beach or spa but i like to enjoy them any time, watches are for use them! So, will a twin lock crown resist a bath in the beach or spa temps??

So the Twin lock is rated at 100 meters, I doubt very much that you do that in any pool or shower. As long as the crown is screwed in tight and meets the pressure test you should be more than fine.

Should be fine for non-extreme use, including swimming & the beach. Be sure to rinse the watch in fresh water after taking it to the beach, to cleanse it of saltwater or sand/grit. :)

Over the years Rolex have acquired quite a few out sourced patents for the R.W.C like the twin lock crown system.It was around 1925 Hans Wilsdorf of Rolex heard that two watchmakers Paul Perregaux and George Pelleot,had taken out a swiss patent for a twin lock crown screwed stem system .Now Hans Wilsdorf of Rolex grasped that a hermetically sealed case, together with careful fitting of the crystal and a special stem mechanism, would produce a better water proof wristwatch.He quickly negotiated to have the Perregaux patent assigned to him,then Wilsdorf obtained a British patent on October 18 1926.A few months later the Rolex Oyster was born and became a commercial success.. And In 1927, a lady stenographer Mercedes Gleitze, swam the English Channel with the unheard of accompaniment of a wristwatch.It was a Rolex Oyster wristwatch with a twin lock screw crown system.And it was on her person for the entire 15 hour and 15 minute swim so yours will be fine for the beach swimming etc.

The twin lock is very secure....a DJ can handle quite a lot!

Major difference between the twinlock and triplock is that the triplock has three gaskets. The triplock should be completely waterproof for swimming or sitting in a whirlpool even with the crown unscrewed. (Now obviously I wouldn't try this, but it should be.) The twinlock will be more susceptible to water entering the case if the crown isn't completely screwed in.

That said, and as others have noted, both will work for all recreational water activities so long as the crown is screwed in and all gaskets are in tact.

Snorkeled in Jamaica, Hawaii, and Mexico with the twin lock crown without any problems (on either a DateJust or a GMT II - traditional 16710).

The Twinlock system is fine for shallow dives, providing the crown is screwed in. It will also provide some measure of water resistance with the crown out due to the 2 o-rings between the tube and crown, but I wouldn't want to chance it.

Originally Subs were fitted with Twin-lock crowns.. You should be just fine..

Nice to hear all those comments... didn´t know the Sub once had twinlock instead of triplock. So the Datejust is on the way, at first i wanted the new big size but after i tried both the new and the old one i saw clearly that the 36mm fits me much better. Thanks!

Pd- The new 39mm Explorer is the next to come, i´ll start saving at once!

The real issue for me with the twin lock is I find it hard to get my oversize fingers around it.

I have the ladies' Yachtmaster, which does not have the triple-lock that the men's version does...I, too, do not want to keep the watch in a hotel safe, so I swim, snorkel, etc. With it. I just make sure i rinse it carefully to get salt water, sand, chlorine, etc. Off of it.
