General Consensus, Is This COMEX Steep???

How is everyone?

I came across this watch while strolling eBay and I thought to myself that seems steep for a Comex Submariner. Would any of you pay $90K for this watch? Maybe I have been out of the loop, but $90K seems to be at the tiptop of the market. I have seen Comex Subs go for $40K, $50k, maybe even $65K for some, but not $90K. It does come with the "Certificate De Reception" from Comex to the diver it was issues and a copy of the divers Comex ID. The watch looks to be in impeccable shape. But $90K??? Its not even a "meters first" Comex...

WOULD YOU, IF YOU COULD???

If not, what would be an honest and fair price you think???

The price and market for these watches are only what anyone is prepared to pay.Now this watch has full Providence and looks all a original watch who knows what some will pay they are quite rare.

Well the 5514 is the cream of the Comex crop. The early 5514 watches had Rolex COMEX across the caseback and non Comex dials. The later 5514 watches had large numbers with Rolex Comex around the caseback and Comex dials. The Helium Escape Valve (HEV) was deleloped and tested on 5513 and 5514 (reference for COMEX only) for COMEX before being commercially available in the original SeaDweller in 1967. Coming with full Providence brings a premium.

To answer your question on that specific watch--NO. Rob will sell it for far less also. I know the watch and wouldn't buy it. I do not like the markers on it and there are far nicer examples for sale if you were to search hard. Rob also has a 5513 Milisub for sale--hands don't look right-he is asking $125k for--it can be bought for $85k. So--his listed prices are one thing and actual another.

There are numerous comex subs that sell for that and mOre, that example would be about right If the dial wasn't nasty ...

A 16610 sapphire loose watch may be $30k ... A mission 5514 may be $150k ... And anything in between

Saying a comex sub is like saying a Porsche 911 ... Many models, many nuances , many levels of prOvenance and condition .... The good ones you'll rarely see in public

Exactly!!! The nice ones rarely sell and when they do they like most nice examples are exhanged from one collector to another!! When I say nice ones I mean ones like yours Jed--and your fellow Comex friends!! I have seen the pictures--lucky guys!!

As usual great comments from our vintage guys regarding the comex sub.
I have to agree with Ken those plots are uneven and discolored I would not consider that a perfect example regardless if it's all original.

It is all original David-I know the watch--it is just the dial is messed up.
As Jed stated though--there are huge differences in Comex Subs and prices reflect those differences!!

Ken, Robert is flexible on pricing? I've contacted him or his associates on a couple of occasions and they have been completely unwilling to budge on their prices, which seem very high IMHO. Is there a secret password you need to give them before they will give you a decent price? Seriously though, I would like to know if they are willing to negotiate -- to this point I've pretty much written them off as a source because of their prices and seeming unwillingness to work with you.

Love that bezel insert... but overall seems a bit pricy for the condition

On eBay it does state or best offer on all their listings. In fact it says something along the lines that we will listen to any offer. But I have no real experience with Robert and do agree his prices are listed too high in most cases. Take in consideration Ken knows everyone in the biz so maybe he gets the secret password...lol

Yeah, maybe I don't get the good price because I'm just an average joe and don't have Ken's credentials.

Most recently I inquired about a 1680-8 that RM had up for sale. The asking price was something like $25k, which is really high for the current market, and they seemed uninterested in moving south of that mark. I was a bit surprised as the watch has been on their website and eBay for many months.

They are very flexible in pricing - at least with me. In fact on most pieces they would come way off of. I just have not found one that I like too much--with exception of their RCO screw down!!! That is the bomb!!!
Not sure on why not with you--I assure you I have no clout nor credentials.
